I'm from California and moved to oregon recently and just recieved a ticket for running a yellow light I know laws differ so I am wondering if anyone knows if it is illegal to go through a yellow light in Oregon? ....For some people who assume I did something aside from running a yellow light like going faster or was talking on a cell phone or what not, all I did was run a yellow light, honestly and that is what is on my $242.00 citation 811265 "failed to obey traffic control device/ ran yellow light.

that makes sense I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on! lol and I just took the ticket because I didn't want to argue with anyone, so would it be worth contesting? I have heard sometimes the judge will just dismiss it and just let you pay half the fine and keep it off your recored... I don't want my first ticket to be for a yellow light! lol

yeah I made it across fine and another car that didn't get pulled over made across fine behind me too :) and to be honest the officer wasn't rude at first it sounded like he was going to warn me just saying yeah just try not to do it again and then he handed me a citation

but that wouldn't be the truth I most likely could have stopped with out having a finder bender or anything like I would have had to brake a little harder but it could have been done safely so with that being said I really don't feel I should say that it would have been unsafe.... it would unsafer then going for sure but to say it couldn't be done isn't true I could have stopped as a matter fact I didn't knowing the cop was there just because I didn't think it would be an issue in the least

Yeah I went to traffic court once in Corvallis, Oregon and the Judge made it very clear that the yellow light means stop unless it is unsafe to do so.

I'd fight it. Tell the judge that from your judgement there was not enough time to make a safe and complete stop. If the ticket says yellow light, I'm 99.99% certain you would win.
You say: "but that wouldn't be the truth I most likely could have stopped with out having a finder bender or anything like I would have had to brake a little harder but it could have been done safely so with that being said I really don't feel I should say that it would have been unsafe"
If you say that, and believe it then you admit the officer ticketed you fairly and the ticket was just. The only way that you can get out of the ticket is by telling the judge that at that you felt it was safer to go through the yellow light than stop. If that is true tell the judge that, and in all likelyhood the ticket will be dropped. Is it possible that you could have made a safe and complete stop looking back on it? Yes. Were you thinking you could stop safely at the time???? If the answer is no, then getting this ticket dropped is easy. This comes down to a matter of judgement. yours and the police officer. Since it was a yellow light it is not hard to prove that in your judgement it was safer to go through the yellow light than to stop.
Or you can just go and pay the $242.00 and have your insurance increase a lot for going through a yellow light. And by a lot I mean that. Your MVR will only say failure to obey traffic control device. Which in their minds will mean running a red light. A big infraction to an insurance company.

here is what the oregan state law reads: Steady circular yellow signal. A driver facing a steady circular yellow signal
light is thereby warned that the related right
of way is being terminated and that a red or
flashing red light will be shown immediately.
A driver facing the light shall stop at a
clearly marked stop line, but if none, shall
stop before entering the marked crosswalk
on the near side of the intersection, or if
there is no marked crosswalk, then before
entering the intersection. If a driver cannot
stop in safety, the driver may drive cautiously
through the intersection.

If it works as my own personal accident did and from talking to other police, then you are both considered to be at fault. Let me explain my situation first: I actually went through a GREEN light and struck a car turning left. I was "anticipating the green" from about 100 ft. before the intersection as I approached a red light. It turned green before I came to the intersection and I accelerated. I never saw the car turning left until it was too late, because the intersection was HUGE, I was in the far right lane, and all the other traffic blocked my view. The other driver was obviously pretty late, but because the intersection was so large, he probably started his turn on a yellow arrow (or at least COULD have). So, according to the police, he had a responsibility to know he wasn't going to beat the green light and shouldn't have turned. On the other hand, I had the responsibility to not go through the intersection until it was confirmed clear. Therefore, we were both at fault, and I think this applies to your example as well. Doesn't seem fair, but that's the way it fell for me. Nathan

Being from CA, this is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Running a yellow light? Red means stop, green means go, yellow means beware, red is coming. If yellow means stop... wait I'm confused
Leave Oregon immediately!

If you still have California plates, that may explain it. PS: Why is it that most Californians run red lights for a full 10 seconds after the light changes??? I see it all over the western half of the USA, and they all have CA plates...

hmm same thing happen to me as i was coming home downtown portland.I had to pay it cause the policeman said it was turning red and could have caused a accident as i was going under it.. its not illegal but they have to make a quota and are like bumblebees all over on certain days.. personally i think they all get jumped by the mayors or something so they all gang up in areas and write a bunch of tickets. best thing just pay it and get em off your back.. one thing about it they will work with you if you call them and tell them you don't have the money right now but i think you can pay a little at the time.

You must still have California plates on your car. You may have entered the intersection on amber and did not clear the intersection before the light changed to red.

In most of the states and other world countries, crossing a yellow traffic light is illegal. I'm even surprised that you claim in California crossing a yellow light is legal. Please check your information.
