A simple federal return at such a place can start around $70. For about $30, the commercial preparer can have your fees taken out of your refund, if that meets your needs.

If you are concerned about getting a new preparer, ask for an experienced one. There are many.

Geebaby makes some very good points. I would additionally add that a CPA can often be cheaper than Block. CPAs charge by the hour, but Block charges by the form. So if you have a lot of small items (mortgage, one stock sale, some bank interest, children, child care expenses) then that is five or six forms that cost a whole lot more than a CPA would charge for completing those forms.

If you choose to have someone else do your taxes, the solution is to obtain quotes and go with whoever makes you feel more comfortable. However if your taxes are very easy (especially if you have none of the list above) consider going to www.irs.gov and filing yourself. You may qualify for free filing. Thats where I do my taxes. I don't qualify for free but it has never cost me more than $20 to file. Just click on the efile icon on the left hand side and let the site guide you to the most appropriate provider.

You can elect to have your return electronically deposited into your bank account. If you file (and your return is accepted) by early Thursday of one week, your refund will be deposited by Friday of the next week.

If you have certain deductions or credits you cannot file until February 3rd. The most common ones are the tuition and fees deduction and the state sales tax deduction.

I found it waste of money to use H&R Block because the people who prepare the taxes are just as naive as you are. If you have a very complicated status, e.g., Single mother/father, sold a property/stocks, received gambling money, have a mortgage payments, etc., you may want to use them just because they provide insurance on that.

Otherwise, I would use turbo tax on line or the CD to prepare it myself. It's extremely easy to use, all you need to do is answer the questions popped on every screen and once you answered them correctly and accurately, and enter the required information, ta da... you complete the tax return!

Cost of H&R Block for simple case was about $98.00 for Single Tax Payer with no mortgage, no selling properties or bonds or stocks, you could just use turbo tax online for only $20.00 and save the $78 to buy a pair or two shoes...:-)

Good Luck!
