It is most likely from scratching his face (with his paws) and he injured his eye himself.
Make a cup of warm saline solution, by dissolving a teaspoon of salt in a cup of hot water.. Dip a very clean folded washcloth or paper toweling in the water and hold pressed on the eyelid for 5 minutes..this should ease the discomfort...Repeat twice tonight, and if it isn't better by morning, your dog should see the vet...
If it isn't better by morning, it could be an inverted lid, or an allergic reaction to something.
(leave the cloth quite wet)

Could be an ingrown eyelash or a hair that got caught under the eyelid and has caused irritation. Take him to the vet in the morning to be sure.
(Yes dogs have eyelashes. Look closely, you'll see them)

It could be just an irritation from something in carpet or house. Did not say what breed. Some are more prone to eye problems, inverted lid.
Call your vet tomorrow to inquire on this. It may be minor but let's not risk it. Eye drops may be needed to heal.

yes take him to the vet. do not put anything into his eye except saline drops until further instructed by your vet. any other type of drop could make it worse and more painful. try keeping a cool compress on it off and on tonight, call the er vet if you think he's in bad pain, but definatly call a vet asap. good luck.
