diesel

This depends. The V10 has been upgraded to 3 valves per cylinder and is a little smother. However, it stills feels a little burdened when loaded (not to mention the exhaust note is nothing short of boring). Diesels are better. Yes, they are heavier, more expensive, and now cost more to run.
On the other hand, the are truly amazing machines.
For example: We own an 2003 XLT Ford Excursion equipped with leather seats and the 6.0L Diesel. Performance (and towing)were exceptional right out of the box. Rather than being satisfied, we took it to Gale Banks (www.bankspower.com) and put a full blown turbo system on the already-fireball. For the record, our motor is running (on the rear wheels) 465 hp and 810 lb.-ft of torque.

The thing is a freak machine.

When you have that much horsepower, it almost frightens you. Just the other day, a Subaru WRX STi got on to the on-ramp at the same time we did. Upon hearing the driver race his engine, my dad laid the pedal down and lit the tires in smoke. It's so fast, you feel like you're in a rocket. By the time the onramp had narrowed to one lane, we had blown the doors of the Subaru.
Don't worry about fuel economy. We (on average) get 18 in the city and up to 28 on the highway - allowing us to travel almost 900 miles on one tank.

I'm not making this up.

The diesels have double the torque, more resale value, and have really improved in refinement. If you've got the cash, go for the grunt.

P.S. - Sorry for giving you a life story. =]

Depends upon how much pulling and how much you want to spend in maintaince...

The Diesel like everyone said is far better, but to keep a powerstroke going requires maintaince that some can't fathom when the cheapie oil change is $60 on the diesel and go far too long without the maintaince. Also a P-stroke loves to be abused.... Ford mechanics and owners joke about the best way to run one is to run it like you stole it....

The v-10 is a very reliable motor (whereas the 6.0 Diesel has had some quality issues mainly in early production).. The 6.4 is new and is was beat up for about a million miles before it was introduced this go around so it shouldn't suffer the same fate.

So actually, it depends.. willing to spend money on maintaince for the pulling power of a Diesel? Or you plan on more light loads and rather a normal car maintaince... it's your decision

From reading you will hear diesel can haul more and last longer. This is true. Since gas and diesel prices fluctuate differently, it's hard to say one fuel is better than another (right now anyway). But, are you buying this vehicle for it's hauling capability, or just as a vehicle to drive around?
If you are just buying it to drive and run errands, but don't plan on hauling often, look into the gas. Why? Read on:

Gas is available at any gas station, diesel is sometimes a little harder to come by. Diesel needs special care in super cold climates, where it will turn to gel if it gets too cold. In a full tank, it's OK, but if you leave only a 1/4 tank over night in chilly weather, you may be catching a ride from someone else the next morning.

If you plan on keeping the vehicle for over 200,000 miles and hauling stuff often, go diesel!

GAS Superduty Fords (stock without hauling a heavy load) get up and go faster than their diesel counterparts, this goes for any of the diesel line up light trucks regardless of maker. Running around town in a diesel and not carrying anything, you will be the turtle at the stoplight. With that V-10 gas, you will give most cars a run for their money!

One other item, look at the maker of the engine, even domestic. Duramax (Chevy) is an Isuzu product. Some makers use International, Cummins, and Caterpillar. I have been away from Ford for 5 years now, but I remember seeing International on one of the last diesels I drove for them. So , look under the hood and see who's diesel engine is really under the hood.

I worked for a Ford Dealer for 4 years and drove the vehicles off the trains for GM before that, I drove over 25,000 vehicles in that time frame, until Uncle Sam recalled me.

Good luck.

V10 Diesel

Well, if you're looking for power, and most truck owners are, then the Powerstroke diesel is the way to go. Not only does the diesel have more power and torque than the gas powered triton v10, but you'll also save a little money at the pump. Not to mention there are many aftermarket add-ons to choose from for the diesel engine that will boost the performance as well as increase the fuel mileage.

The v10 won't get outta it's own way, look at the price difference between the v10 vs the diesel on the used market, used car lots can't give away the v10 when the diesel's are sometimes selling for twice as much.

I'm almost certain you'll delete this but here goes The V10 is a #1 gas hog, skip that. At present time the diesel in the Chevrolet pick up has 75 more horsepower than the Ford and more usable torque. Guys around hear are getting 23 - 25 mpg. easy. unloaded. I personally know owners of both. Ask this question again: Between the Ford and Chevrolet, which diesel motor and drive-line has less mechanical issues. Please do it for your oun sake.

diesel. in my opinion, the v10 is a pointless engine. it's only pro is that it's quieter...and some people would say that's a bad thing. The diesel has more power, even more takeoff power than the v10, gets MUCH better gas mileage, and will last a heck of a lot longer.
