Males are not always larger than females. It all depends on what genetics they inherited since so many cats have so many "breed" in them, not to mention that a lot of cats get pregnant by more than one male in a single pregnancy. Typically you can't tell any differnece between males and females by looking at them without inspecting genitals. Some males may have a wider head as they get older but this isn't always true either.

These differences are especially apparent if the male cat is not neutered. His head generally grows bigger and rounder. He developed very obvious jowls, a kind of thick mane to protect his throat from bites (for other males).. He is usually more muscular and lean (the hormones + the fights). Not long after that, he'll be recognisable by his many bald patches and battle scars. A female has a smaller body. She tends to have a slimmer face and outline. Male neutered cats (depending on how early there were neutered) tend to be a little bit more female looking without the jowls.. However, neutered males tend to grow larger than whoe males because all the energy spent on sex and fighting goes into physical development and a nicer coat.
Hope this helps.

Mature male cats get very thick skin on their cheeks and chin-"jowls". Like men get beards when they mature. So their faces often look bigger and rounder. If you feel it, it's unmistakaeable. It feels like shoe leather. It serves a purpose too, it protects them when they fight.

Neutered males don't develop the jowls, so most people with housecats aren't familar with this trait. Neutered boys don't have testosterone in their system, so this change never occurs.

A male cat will be generally larger than it's sister.
