Unfortunately, society does view single women as inferior to married women. People always assume that there is something wrong or unfeminine about a single woman who is above a particular age (depending on culture). There is no solid explanation for this but culture, emphasis on sex within marriage (single women might be seen as promiscuous in some cases), reproduction (a child born out of wedlock is still called an "illegitimate" child), etc. might be some. Sometimes, women themselves promote this view - many married women add 'Mrs.' in front of their names with pride (how many men do you know who are "proud" of being married?)

If yo had asked this question a few years ago, I would have said true. But today times have really changed, 51% of American women are not married. Society is changing so that it is becoming easier for a woman to live on her own (also shown in the increasing number of single women buying real estate). Years ago this was unheard of. It was just assumed that a woman had to marry a man or she could not afford to live on her own. In fact the old saying "22 skadoo" refers to an old tradition that women should be married and out of the house by age 22. But nowadays with the increasing number of professional women who are going for more education are realizing they can afford to pay their own bills. I myself am 22 and live alone, I am not horribly opposed to marriage but also don't feel it's absolutely necessary for my survival. I think the old traditions are breaking down, so I will have to say false.
