I had windows 2000 on I updated with xp how do I use both of them or how do i recover what is already on my computer?
I know that you can split them up but i don't knoe how.

You can buy an expensive partition program that will enable you to use either 2000 or XP. However, I would just use XP, since allot more programs are compatible with it. Hopefully before you install XP you back up to a CD, memory stick, or even a floppy important things, like music you downloaded, favorites and email addresses. Once XP installs, it wipes you your hard drive clean and all will be lost.
