Most excellent question.
I would say if you believe in an eternal afterlife, then you make this life have no meaning, it's just seen a rehearsal for the main event (the afterlife). It's a very dangerous way of viewing the world. One of the things that makes life so precious, in my opinion, is that it is so short in the grand scheme of the universe. If you think you have all eternity to live you're not going to live this life to its fullest. You're going to waste it away waiting for your afterlife to start.

"If you need an afterlife to give meaning to your life, what meaning will there be for living in an afterlife?"
you say IIIIIFFFF... but i dont need an after life to give meaning to my life...
"If you will never die, you will have no risks. If there is time, it is endless. If there is no time, your life, while ever lasting, will have no sense of time passing. "
and you cant compare death to an afterlife... those are TWO different ideas... or should i say events.
"If there is perception, how can there be beauty with no squalor with which to compare it?"
this is true.. but doesnt not apply to death and an afterlife... life is beautiful and meaningful because of the experiences (good and bad) that we have.
"What purpose will you have in the next world?"
to enjoy myself... and when i get bored and want to learn more.. come back to this stinking planet.

If there was an afterlife then I would prepare for it. However, I just live my own life and don't need an afterlife to look forward to. That philosophy helps me live life to its fullest. But if there was an afterlife I would guess that the point in the afterlife would be to look forward to the next life. Reincarnation is really the only way I will ever be able to look at our world.

The ' afterlife' everyone hopes for is not spiritual, but back on the earth, in the flesh. whether a person is righteous and survives Armageddon, or dies before and is resurrected [ Rev. 20; 12,13] their life will be as described at Psalm 37; 9,11,29, & 34.
Their job will be to work and return the earth back to its original pristine condition, just like Eden.
Once we have proven we can look after our own earth properly, God may allow us to expand to the stars.
A very small number, out of all the people who have ever lived, 144,000, do have a spiritual future. These are chosen because they are truly righteous and have earthly experience.
They will assist Jesus in the judgement. Rev. 20; 12,13
they will even judge angels. Rev. 20;4 and 1 corinthians 6; 2,3
the ones on the earth will be so busy cleaning up, they will never get bored.
And all will be worshipping Almighty God.

From an genuinely Christian attitude, the reply is that the afterlife ought to no longer be the point of this life. the point of this life is to love and to assist others out of suffering. Too many people misunderstand that. of direction, this concept also makes me ask your self why God did not only make us all loving believers interior the first position...

Some things are good in themselves, and need no other outside purpose. In the life to come, according to Christian teaching, we will perceive God directly and enjoy Him forever, a transcendent experience which fulfills the human heart.
Beauty and goodness have value in themselves and can be enjoyed even without comparison to ugliness and evil. One of St. Augustine's main philosophical insights, written in his book "Confessions", is that evil doesn't have an independent existence as good does; evil is merely an absence of good, so that the good is superior to evil at the very level of being. For Augustine, this was a philosophical reversal, because for a while, he followed a religion that treated good and evil as equally substantial. In a sense, it exaggerated evil.

That attitude serves to keep people focused on their religion, instead of their lives. Convince someone that their life is meaningless in this world, and they'll do whatever you want in this world. Convince them to give up more and more, in exchange for an unimaginable reward that's just out of reach, and the gullible will give you everything.
Christianity is the precursor to the Nigerian 419 scam.
