Could be fluid buildup and if you stay off of it the swelling will go down and then resume your walking. Do any kind of strength training for your upper legs to build the muscle around the knee. My doctor recommended leg lifts which you can do with a low cost machine from Wal-mart or just simply sit on a bench and do reps of leg lifts without any weights or ankle weights. If you opt for a machine try to get something that will allow you to add additional weights or go to a gym where they have nautilus equipment. I wouldn’t keep walking on a weak knee as that can really hurt you long term and lead to arthritis as well.

Do you have good arch supports? if not get some.
Have you been to a chiropractor to see if you are aligned properly? it is possible to have something out of place referring pain. In my case the muscles got tight no causing pain so much (because my tolerance is so high) but the knee would just fold (not support my weight). It was a matter of the muscles being tight so the massage therapist that works in his office had to apply pressure in the right spots on the quads to get them back to normal. (I could not because that did hurt).

You could be suffering from arthritis. Check your diet...you could be eating a lot of fatty foods , beans, or drank alcohol or beer lately...it could contribute to joint pains. There's really a point in our lifestyle that needs to be checked once in a while in order to avoid health complications later in life.
