Yes, prices usually go up. It is better if you purchase your ticket 14 days in advance, if possible.

People say earlier because the prices go up when purchased closer to the day you leaving. Actually its bull**** lol...I recently went to NY from FL in December a few days before Christmas and purchased a week before 2 tickets roundtrip only paid like $300. The thing is I checked by the end of that week and the tickets were b/w $400-600. Then all of sudden that day it said 150 each I was soo surprised. I think when the people cancel their flights the last minute those are the spaces that go for cheaper. You know since is last minute fill ins mind you I went in Christmas time when they are really expensive. I usually do the last minute purchases and always get a good deal. Just make sure you check at least 2 weeks ahead and check everyday you'll see how the prices change all of sudden.

Usually up. However, sometimes it goes down if the flight isn't filling or if some special deal arrives.

I was recently surprised to learn that if you purchase a ticket and the price goes down (up to two weeks before the flight), you can be issued a flight credit for the difference. Not sure if this appiles to all airlines.

Always up, unless it is a tour. Can get some cheaper rates on tours if it is not sold out.
