OUr 13 month old male Black Lab races after the cat whenever it gets a chance. (outside) He recently did catch the cat and pinned him down and I thought that the poor cat was going to die. It was a frightening experience for me, not to mention for the cat! Fortunately the cat is now fine (it is said that cats have 9 lives) and wanting to go play again. I am just concerned that this could happen again.

first u need to stay calm if it happens again and it mostly likely will if u didn't stop it right away...
put a choke chain on the dog behind the ears and so the part u snap the leash to come back at u try to walk by the poor kitty and befor ethe dog tries to get the cat give a tug and say Leave i like this command and use it on anything i don't want my dogs to have or chase....
you could start with treats by laying one on the floor and everytime the dog goes for it put ur hand under its jaw push up a little and say leave when the dog does not try to get it for a sec then say GET or hand it to him. wotk your way up to the cat dog leashed ofcourse and when the dog knows what 'leave' will mean it will leave the cat and reward it toy treat pet whatever.. dogs only what to please and once they understand what u want..they are pleased and so are u...

My dog does the same thing to my cat indoors. He is a nine month old German Shepherd mix and could definitely hurt the cat if he wanted to, so I get a little nervous about this. It's gotten a little better since I've started training him though. I just scold him when he chases the cat and since he's so eager to please it seems to slow him down the next time. I also have my fiance hold the cat while I hold the dog and vice versa and make them be next to each other for extended periods of time. This has worked wonders. The cat doesn't like to jump down around the dog, but he will now, especially if he wants something like food or love. I've also noticed the dog calming down a lot.

That's the nature of the dog. The lab is in the retriever category of dogs. Just make sure your dog is chained up when hes outside so he cant go after it. And if you don't have any cats theres nothing to worry about

this is the nature of a dog. chase what runs. put your lab on a leash and when he makes a move for the cat, tell him no and make him sit. if he gets up, put him back into the sit postition. enroll him in a training class so you can learn how to have control over him off leash. training and being consistant with the training is the only way you are going to break this. is it your cat?

Labs are usually gentle dogs that get along with just about any animal. Are you sure he wasn't trying to play? As much as the cat may hate it, your dog will continue this behavior until you train him not to which is very possible. I have 2 Lab pups that love to play with our cats but they are quickly learning that the oldest cat doesn't like to play.
