Although Maroochydore is closer, its gonna be quicker to drive directly from Brisbane if you have to connect to get to Maroochydore. The zoo is less than an hour from BNE airport, or 40mins from Maroochydore. Easier drive from BNE too, freeway all the way, then signposted offramp, whereas from Maroochydore is a few more turns and stuff. They run a free shuttle that might collect from the airports, check their website.
Its a great zoo, but for me it will never be the same without him. Saw him there a few times, back as early as 99 through 2004. Arrive early, plan to stay a full day. Take a picnic, its allowed there. Take water. Wear loose cotton clothing - think Irwin khakis, he wore 'em for a reason! Beerwah can get warm.

You would most likely have to fly in to Brisbane if you are coming from overseas at that is the closest international airport. Then on to Maroochydore. It is probably about a half hour drive on to Beerwah from there. It is a lovely area with many different places to stay. I have stayed at Key Largo apartments when in Maroochydore and there are car hire places within walking distance from there. Or alternatively you can hire cars from the airport.
As well as seeing the Australia Zoo you can visit the Big Pineapple, which is a pineapple plantation, the Ginger Factory, Underwater world and the major craft area Montville.

the closest international airport is in brisbane. the domestic is maroochydore. if you are planning on staying nearby, i would suggest any of the sunshine coast towns that are on the coast. they are all really nice, and an easy drive to get to beerwah.
i have been to australia zoo a few times and it is great. i havent been since they built the crocoseum though, so it would be even better now. make sure you plan for the whole day, take sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water. maybe even a picnic if you are watching your money. have fun at the zoo.

The closest international airport would be Brisbane. There are much better zoos in Australia than the Australia Zoo at Beerwah.

Honestly, I don't think that the zoo will close. It may have a memorial there for Mr. Irwin, and it may have a special event on Mr. Irwin's B-day. But I don't think that it will close. Many places have unfortunate accidents happen there and they do not close. Think of the Space Shuttles that have had untimely deaths. Its kind of tough but in this world, life must go on.
