The coke bottle works but only for one shot and screws up the accuracy of the round and not well on a 9mm, optimally it's for a bolt action .22
The pillow works but the circumstances of using it are dubious of course.
The potato is more of a myth, for one its extremely hard to secure a potato to a gun, especially a semi-automatic handgun, secondly it messes with the ballistics so much that if you were planning on hitting and killing or seriously wounding someone I would doubt you could accomplish it from more than 10 feet.

Really unless you get a permit, shop on the black market, or are a really good metal-smith you will not be able to come across a passable suppressor.

As for all the people dissing this question, relax, who do you people think you are? Whatever happened to freedom of information, quit being so serious all the time. Besides if the guy was really going to do something illegal I doubt not getting an answer on a website is going to prove a deterrent.

Professional Experience PVC pipe with an end cap 1 1/4" dia 3 tennis balls 3 pieces of steel wool one piece of pipe reduced to the size of your barrel of the gun. Glue the pipe together leave the end cap. Place your first tennis ball followed by your steel wool and repeat place your end cap on the pipe and glue. I used this on an M-11 worked for 3 min on full auto before the plastic melted. Side note for a silencer to work you need an expansion chamber for the gases to expand and slowly release any small plastic bottle works but only at short distances no more than 10'.

Well Sic, they really only work in the movies. Especially the ones that look like a champagne cork. For a silencer to really silence a handgun like a .9mm, it would have to be the size of a car muffler.

I've fired Beretta 9s w/military-styled suppressor and sub-sonic ammo to help damp the sound and they are still loud. When the action opens to expel the spent shell it lets out noise. Also, they are messy as you have to keep adding oil (to the baffles) and they make your gun nose-heavy and harder to conceal as it is at least as long as the gun barrel and slide. Final note: Silencers are illegal to possess. Home made ones are crude, don't work, could damage your gun, injury you and get you sent to the pen.

You have a very wide choice of ammunition on hand for it. From plink away to near head splatter in one shot capacity. If, you are proficient and confident of using it? It makes a fine pistol. It depends on how resourceful you are, and what you've got in your "home". The coke bottle works poorly, especially as a 9mm is usually an automatic, thereby making this a one shot affair. (Firearm jams due to duct tape, and coke bottle is blown apart.) Far more practical is to conceal the weapon in a pillow or other muffling substance. If minimal pressure is used in holding the weapon, the slide may function well enough for follow-up shots if needed.

Do keep the "Federal Crime" angle in mind, and remember that firing through an item like a pillow will leave trace elements on the bullet and the target which can be linked to you, unless you burn your clothing (and scrub your skin!) after disposing of the "muffler".

First fill out the federal paperwork for a Class III license and get your checkbook out. Once approved the BUY a properly constructed silencer and a new threaded barrel to mount it on.

If you can't do this, don't do it all.

Putting a silencer on a handgun is a federal crime, punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison. Therefore, I strongly advise against trying to make a silencer.

Instead of answering his stupid questions, you should stop and think about how these ignorant people are causing the legal firearm owners such a headache.
