He doesn't even acknowledge the money that was loaned to him. He will not let anyone in to see his old house, which is for sale, until he individually goes through every piece of paper in every box. Some of the boxes have not been opened since he moved in the house 30 years ago. Now my mom's credit is ruined. And he doesn't seem to care. She cosigned for him on his new condo with a promise to sell the house and pay my mom back. That was like 5 years ago. What should I do?

It sounds like he has a case of dimentia or even alzheimers.
If your mom can make a case that he is mentally not
able to make sound decisions, she can be appointed his
legal conservator, whereby she handles all the financial
affairs. She can then straighten out all the mess hopefully.
If she waits too long, and if he gets into financial trouble...
the Court will appoint a County Conservator and then the
finances are out of her hands. See an attorney that handles
Senior problems. Go to a Senior Resources Center.
He may not be able to stay in his condo and that's why
he doesn't want anyone knowing his personal business.
I think he's already in trouble but doesn't know what to do
about it. If he's not careful the bank will foreclose on his
condo, then all the money put into it is lost.

It sounds like he has dementia. I hope your mom has a loan agreement in writing.

The best course of action is to see an Elder law attorney or petition the family court. You can file a motion pro se by going to the family court and asking for a petition to become his advocate. That way your mom would have access to his records.

This not being mean spirited. My mom has this condition so your grandfather truly does not remember if he is suffering from dementia.

Hopefully your mom can get him settled financially and get some of her loan repaid. Good luck. This is a true heart breaking tale.

"cause that was money i earned" you found a dog, you didnt go out and work for the money maybe your mom is having a really hard time financially just now and doesnt have the money ok she shouldnt have promised to pay it back but i'd give my mom $150 in a heartbeat if she was struggling, she wouldnt even need to ask you had $50 for yourself is it really asking too much to contribute money you were GIVEN? she will have spent thousands on you over the years cut her some slack

How old are you first of all? There is different things that you may be able to do depending on this. Although it sounds like your mom got herself into a sticky situation with her father that may be unresolvable outside of a courtroom. Issues like this can be devastating to a family. Have you tried talking to your grandfather about why he refuses to acknowledge that your mom has done this to help him out and why he feels justified in taking advantage of her?

if she does not have anything in writing from your grandpa then it is just his word against hers. If she has an agreement in writting and signed by your grandpa then she could take him to small claims court.
