Generally less than 30 days. Of course you can pick them up in person and avoid the wait.

If you go as a "walk-in" to any Secretary of State office (look it up under STATE government) you can have your plates the same day, or right away assuming the wait time and number of people ahead of you.

If on the other hand you want to have them mailed to you, the average time to get them back to you is about 10 days; sometimes sooner, rarely later.

I keep saying this...but each state is different. So in order to be able to answer this type of question correctly you need to include the state. Example. Many states issue temporary tags to give you or the dealership so many days to title and register the car. But some states the customer does it, others the dealership does it. Some states the dealership gives you their temporary, and when you go to MV, they issue another temporary until the state processes the application.

It depends on the state and the dealer. Some states you have to pay your taxes and get your own plates. Enjoy the new car feeling, once you get the plates it takes away that, "look at my new car", feeling. Congrats!
