Why does your mom think the cat would be put down?? If he is sick enough to justify that kind of worry, then he definitely needs to see a vet. The decision to euthanisize is made by the owner, not the vet, btw -- the vet will only make a recommendation.
There can be many reasons a cat will stop eating (from sore teeth, fever, kidney disease, emotional distress, etc.). It is hard on their liver though, especially if they are fat, so you want to find out the problem.
Sometimes sprinkling a few drops of water on wet catfood will entice them to eat -- it makes the food smell more. Arby's roast beef, from the sandwhiches, always enticed mine when nothing else would. (He had kidney disease :-( and needed medicine to keep healthy). Good luck.

Your mom must have more reason to believe that the vet might want to put him down.
I think a trip to the vet is in order. Excessive water consumption by a cat can indicate several maladies. Diabetes is one, thyroid problem is another... There could be several reasons why he is drinking and not eating. The vet should be the one to advise you.
But believe me, no animal, but a human, will intentionally starve itself to death, unless he is very sick. You may need to change cat foods. Leave dry food down for him, eventually he will eat.
I've had a cat go eight days without eating... there was nothing wrong with her. She just didn't feel like eating.... She's doing just fine since then, a year and a half later.

maybe he might has a throat problem cause maybe cancer or the pains just made him feel odd and different . you can try to just gave him some solid cans foods instead like tuna or you should go to another vet center for other check up for youre cat about his health. or youguys should try not to push the cat to eat if he doesnt feel well or he s in much pain by having a ankle injury before. so just leave some dry cat food and with bowl of water . if he doesnt feel hungery now til leave some foods for him to eat later on if he feel like eatting something . maybe he is stomach is full and cants eat anything else .

I would take him to the vet. It would be better to put a cat to sleep than have him starve himself to death. We had a kitten we adopted years ago and he got so sick. He'd drink, but not eat. He got so bad the vet thought he had leukemia or feline AIDS. Turns out, he just had such a cold or something...he lost his desire to eat. The vet kept him for a few days, gave him medicine to get that desire to eat back...and now he's 17 punds of fun. Although it was quite an expense, he's the best cat we've ever had and I'm so glad we got him the help he needed. I hope you can find out what he's got going on and can help him. Good luck!!

I don't think they will put your cat down. First of all, they need your permission to do it, unless the cat has been abused. If the cat has been abused they can refuse to give the cat back to you. If that is not the case, even if the cat is on death's bed, they can not do anything without your permission.
There are many reasons a cat will quit eating, and only a vet can determine and treat the problem. Please take him/her to the vet, and get him/her the help he/she needs?

Is it an old cat? It just may be it's way of winding down to the end of the life cycle. Our cat did the same thing. I took care of my cat until she was 21, and our dogs were 17 and 18. In the end, I would buy pureed baby food/ meats and feed them from my finger to get them to eat. They did that for a few months, but I just prolonged the enevitable. But, I did not regret caring for them.

could be your kitty hurt more than just his leg. Does he seem to be loosing weight? If not could be he isn't real hungry or maybe he is eating when you aren't looking. You might want to check out his stool to see if he is having a movement there. But in any case I would get him to the vet.

Putting your animal to sleep is a decision only you can make and by law they have to have your signature to do it. Take your cat to the vet and see what they think. They may suggest bloodwork or x-rays to see what the problem may be.

The vet won;t put him down unless you request it. Please take him to the vet... and find out what is wrong. He needs some help or meds, his teeth might be bothering him or his gums...... it might cost a few dollars, but if you ask him, he would say please and thanks..... please. Get him to the kitty Dr.
Vets don't put cats down unless the owners agree.
