Melt the butter and then put it in a spritzer to spray it on the popcorn. If you try pouring the melted butter on the popcorn, you get some spots that are saturated with butter and other spots that are dry. The spritzer will spread the butter out and you won't have to use a lot of butter if you are watching your calories.
Hope that helps!

Orville Redenbacher makes an oil called Poppin & Toppin' and I think it tastes just like at the movies once you add a little salt.
Also there is a popcorn popper that's made by Presto that goes in the microwave, no oil needed. You use regular kernels. I think the texture of the popped corn is nicer that air poppers, which make the kernels too styrofoamish to me. The popper is only about $15 availabl at most mass grocers, walmart, target, etc.

I have a similar problem, and I know there's nothing wrong with my butter. In fact, when I was in college (20 years ago) I really enjoyed air popped corn, but since I spent a decade eating microwaved popcorn, I think my taste buds became accustomed to that. And that's too bad, because it's REALLY BAD for you. As is movie popcorn.
I may try to spray it. Or maybe I'll just find a different snack. My son seems to like it.

There are a few brands of sprinkle type powder flavorings that can be added to kettle made corn and many that can be added after its popped. flavors include BBQ, Jalapeno, Chocolate Marshmallow and lots more. And butter go here ---
Read the last two links to see what goes in microwave popcorn. I know im switching back to the old way of doing popcorn now.

Do you like butter? *that* might be your problem. Or the butter is old and rancid.
At our house, we mix butter with soy sauce or menmi (noodle) sauce and put it on the popcorn -- really yummy!
You might try olive oil, with maybe the cheese packet from Kraft Macaroni and Cheese -- that will give it a nice, artificial flavor.
A good way to give popcorn a "kick" is to use seasoning salt instead of plain salt when you flavor your popcorn. You might not need the fake butter!

Something is wrong with your butter. When melted and applied correctly, nothing should make it taste more like regular buttered popcorn than butter. Do not use margarine as it is just water and oil whipped together.

Well, for one thing, NEVER use margarine. When you melt that, it's like pouring water on the popcorn. Make sure you use real butter. The good stuff in the little sticks. Make sure you are shaking the bowl as you drizzle the butter over it. don't just pour it on top. YUM

What you did should be fine - make sure your butter isn't expired or something - or you melted in a clean bowl..
For kicks, you can also try using cheese and mac mix as an added sprinkle for your popcorn :)

Try Orvile Redenbacher's popcorn topping for a rich buttery taste. That's what I use.
