The traditional shepherd sling or the modern slingshot using surgical tubing? It would seem one could use heavier stones with the shepherd sling, but would this really make much of a difference?

The shepherd's sling. Kinetic energy is made with a combination of mass and velocity. A heavier stone going slower can have more energy than a light stone going fast. Also, you can lengthen the straps on the sling to make the arc longer and that will add velocity and give you even more kinetic energy. To find foot pounds of kinetic energy, multiply the weight of the projectile (in grains) by the velocity(in feet per second) squared and then divide that by 450,240 and it will give you ft/lbs of kinetic energy.
