Some can and some can't and circumstances change from person to person. Sometimes triggering situations can change a person.
Sometimes different alters have different skills, even mundane ones and can switch to carry on daily tasks. Ex; one alter drives a car, uses a phone, another can maneuver a vacuum cleaner. It's possible for several alters to be present at once.
Sometimes, it's just a matter of who wants some "out" time.
To Jay g,
Schizophrenia is not the same as multiple personalities. Some people with MP have that disease, but not everyone.

Yes...multiple personalities can indeed switch their alters at a drop of a hat. There are no particular circumstances it just depends on the level of schizophrenia that will attribute to how often these instances occur. There are medications for this, however Tom Cruise would most likely disagree.

It's different for each person that has multiple personalities. If there was on answer to that question, there wouldn't be much for psychologist's to try to figure out. Have you ever seen the movie Sybil? I think multiple personalities come from traumatic events in a person's past and they develop the personalities to deal with their circumstances. I think if the person is reminded of a circumstance their personality switches to the personality that helped them deal with that circumstance.

My dad has multiple personalities (technically dissociative identity disorder). He is currently in the process of integrading, but I remember that his eye would twitch when a new personality came out. It usually happened when he felt uncomfortable with a situation. It also happened when we as a family were going to watch a fun movie. He'd let his little boy personality watch it. What is very interesting is that people with DID can create a dominant personality to take over during most of the time. This dominant personality is more equipped to handle things than the others. My dad, who I think of as my dad, was such a dominant personality. He could let another personality come out along with him. If you are at all curious, my dad had/has (I'm actually not sure if my dad is cured yet b/c he has wished it that we stop referring to his illness) three major personalities besides his dominant self: his child, his spiritual one, and his darker self. The darker self was not evil as the name might seem, but stronger. He was the one that fought with my mom a lot. My mom should get a gold medal for putting up with this complicated marriage. But we seem to be doing fine now. Anyways, hope I didn't bore you and hope this helped. I recommend seeing the movie Sybil with Sally Field.

I know that it took several of the people I know that work for a living, several minutes to change a personality. If you are adept at working with your multiples, you can make rules as to who can come out at work and who can not. If the wrong multiple comes out I used to suck on a lemon wedge. That seemed to remind them that what was happening was counterproductive and that I'd deal with their problem at home.
