Dear Steve P:
The study of Spirit is the study of your higher Self. This is founded upon the Knowledge that we are more than just humans:
Spiritualists have sensed their Souls or Spirit-Mind behind the human Intellect. They believe that the Creator Created that Soul or Spirit-Mind in His Own Likeness. Further, they are being taught to remember their God Created Selves while they allow their human Intellect to "steer" them through the experiences of physical life. As they progress in their studies they often will have mystical experiences. These may include direct revelation with God, or two-way communion with the Holy Spirit and Jesus of Nazareth. They experience being Guided by the Holy Spirit through inspired Thought and when they are obedient to His instructions, find that miraculous things occur. The miraculous, in Spirituality, is described as occurrences that take place that are outside of physical law or outside of what is expected in Time and Space. These events honor the spiritualist and all those he/she are involved with, at the time of the event. These events may be healing in nature, or provide where there has been lack. All involved, benefit from every type of miraculous occurrence.
The goals of a spiritualist are to come to know what their relationship is with God and what God's nature truly is. They learn why they are experiencing human life and how it is an experience best used. They learn what value means and is. They learn of concepts that deal with One-ness rather than individuality, and they begin having knowledge of what divine love is composed of and what it feels like.
The following quotes are favorites, and I share them with you:
"Our real Self is not captive of Space and Time." W. R. Inge
". . .genuine mystics are convinced they have been in contact with objective Reality with the Supreme Spiritual Power behind our surface consciousness. If they are right, intuition must be a factor in what we believe about Reality; it means that Reality is spiritual." [Not physical.] W. R. Inge
"The apparent suddenness of mystical revelations is quite normal; Plato in his undoubtedly genuine Seventh Letter speaks of the 'leaping spark' by which divine inspiration flashes on him."
W.R. Inge - Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London 1911-1934

I think spirituality is loving God and loving other people like you love yourself. I think it has nothing to do with religion or religious lingo or rituals like getting on your knees to pray or wearing a cross. Spirituality is basically walking the walk without having to talk the talk. Your actions speak about your spirituality. People who are just religious just do and say religious things that look and sound spiritual but are not so on the inside.

To understand the symbols in which the story of one's life is told. The state of being at peace with one's place in the universe.
It is most important to note that it is not necessary to believe in a deity or the supernatural in order to be spiritual.
