got advice when purchasing products from beauty supply store. Sales lady assured me his hair was not too dark (he was with me) and told me what to use. we were not really trying to bleach, we were trying to achieve a natural blond color. used clairol high lift neutral blond color with 40 volume creme developer. i should have clarifyed earlier that his natural color is light brown to dirty blonde. i am furious with myself because i feel like i should have known better and my 1st instinct told me she was incorrect. i don't understand what toners do. anyone explain?

Big mistake :) Never use 40vol over the whole head.
To fix it. I suggest getting a toner. You can buy premixed shampoo in ones. Schwarzkopf makes one called Extra Care Blonde Toner. Do that a few times.
Or you can get a tube of toning creme. Like a semi permanent haircolour. Mixed with 10vol developer, and applied to the hair.
There is no set time for this, it needs to be watched, otherwise you might end up with purple hair.
To get rid of orange, you might wanna try an ash (blue) toner, and then a violet one over the top.
It won't damage the hair.
JUST DO NOT BLEACH IT AGAIN!
Brown hair should never be bleached at home.

The problem is you didn't learn all you needed to before you did a dye job. Reasearching the basics of dyeing hair is as important as the next thing you would.d research.
Brown hair has red tones in it and the developer probably just had a little bleach in it or peroxide;which would turn the hair orange
You should really only go 1-2 shades lighter or darker between your natural color.
Before you do anything else, go to a professional salon. I did the same thing. I tried to dye my hair a redish color and it turned pink. Then to get rid of it i died it brown and it turned my hair black because the pink was so empty of pigment.
I kicked myself in the *** for dyeing back to brown when it was pink instead of going to the salon because they had to strip it; which means put 100% bleach on my hair which killed it.
But boys are easier because you can shave it off and its back in a month or 2.
So i suggest getting it professionally done. If not Buy a dark Ash blond to tone it down. Colors that have the word "ash" contain blue color pigments which gives your hair a cool silver glow when it hits the light instead of orange.
well good luck

Justt bleach it real quick. 5 minutes will do the trick. L'oreal has a packet I used to buy at the beauty Supply and just mix with the 40 creme developer. Other than that u might try a toner while you rinse the bleach out. Goodluck

Go to a professional right away. They can help lift out the orange. When you try to go from one end of the world to the other [brown-blonde and vice versa], go to a professional. Because with at-home dyes, you most likely will need more than one coloring and that is really damaging.
If you go to a professional, they could have a conditoning treatment afterwards to help relieve the chemical damage.

Do not dye your hair again. You can not dye brunette hair blonde. Blonde is not a color, it is the LACK of color. To obtain those results from brunette, you must bleach (strip) the color out of the hair shaft. You need to go to a top notch salon and ask for someone who specializes in corrective coloring. If you do this again on your own, your hair is going to look like crap. Be ready to shell out some cash, but if your hair is orange, it is worth it.

DONT leave it on for longer then it says it will mess up your hair if you keep it on for to long and then shed have to get most of it cutt off, the reason it has orange is because of the brass color/red based color, the main thing is get a toner but i wouldnt mess with that enless you know what your doing. but mainly wait a while conditioner the hair GOOD when its healthy then you can dye it again or go to a salon and have then get ride of the red.

If your sons hair is dark brown you should have used a color remover before using the "blond color" - Go to a pro - if you try and fix it yourself (example using a darker color) it could end up purple...trust me go to a pro- they can fix it.

if you have blonde hair it will naturally get bleached by the actual sun in the summer. There had been this guy in my class who else had golden blonde hair that was a medium brown near the bottom. When he came back to university after summer vacation, it was almost platinum blonde!
