How do I market homemade ice cream?

Besides advertising at work, what are other methods of marketing homemade ice cream?

Believe it or not, you can't, or rather, you shouldn't

Homemade food products are for the home.

To sell it "retail" or to the public, you need to get food inspection permits, special licenses, insurance, etc. You will, in effect, be a restaurant.

If, by chance you have stumbled on the holy grail of ice cream recipes (a la BEN and Jerry...when they came up with the super rich chunky style) then you need to try to make it in big enough batches to sell retail. Get the approvals and inspections...incorporate (reduce risk!) and tax permits, etc.

Once you have all that business stuff done, then come up with a communication of "what is unique" about your ice cream... why people should buy it versus other ice creams. Convince retailers to stock it by having them taste it...utilize sampling in their stores.

Have free coupons printed...or even donate some to events where opinion leaders congregate..and make sure you have banners saying the brand name of the ice cream.

In the summer get a little freezer van and drive around the streets, get knocking on doors giving little tasters leave your number. You'll probably get a lot of word of mouth from this, write a press release for the local press. i.e. just telling what you do, how you got the idea and any quirky stuff about yourself or the business.

Deliver your ice cream as well but place a minimum order.

Build a wooden stand outside your house and sit there as cars drive by.
Paint the front of it "Home made ICe Cream" 5 Cennts...

You can built up ur own website. I think this is the best way. Create in Microsoft Publisher. Its so easy. U also can send sample of your ice-cream to your neighbor, friend or shop.

lota ppl use mobile phones today. If you have sms facility you could send some classic enjoyable (as enjoyable as your icecream) text message / sms to your friends. BE IT AN AD OR ANYOTHER MESSAGE, If and only IF said in an interesting fashion, people will forward it to their friends.

Apart from this, you could promote your product. other than usual buy 1 get 1 free offers, you could also put up stalls in exhibitions, college cultural events where lota students meet and even school functions. this would give you sales and name simultaneously.
