Those boogers are annoying. They are actually a virus. Anyone can get them. You are more prone to get them when you are under alot of stress and your immune systems is low. My sister is very prone to them. I get them when I am totally frazzled with stress. Most of the over-the-counter stuff doesn't work. I have seen some relief and improvement by taking A-Lysine, which you can get in the vitamin section. You can use carmex or blisteks lip balms to keep them moisturized and try not to lick the area, it makes the healing slow down. Healthy eating and trying to stay stress-free(yeah right) keeps them at bay. Be sure to check with a Doctor first before trying doctor-wanna-be advise. I know there are some good prescription(meds) that do work. Good Luck

Canker sores (aphthous ulcer) are not viral and not communicable. There have been many suggestions as to cause, but none definitely proven. They usually last 10-14 days.
The best remedy is a corticosteroid ointment in a waterproof base. It's called Kenalog in Orabase or Adcortyl in Orabase which contains triamcinalone acetonide. I believe it's about USD$28 per tube. It is very effective for pain relief and for accelerated healing.
Pull out your lip and dry off the ulcer with a tissue. With your little finger, place a dab of ointment on the ulcer and smear it into place. Don't rub it in or it will crumble. Do this 2x daily after having brushed your teeth first.
Another contributor has previously suggested a dental laser of the type Nd:YAG will also work. It seems likely, but probably more costly.
