Schizophrenia means split mind, and in that sense, one part seems normal enough, but along the line of certain subjects, depending on the person, you don't want to bring that up, because it brings on the mental state that is so confusing to the patient. My experience is with someone who was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic, which included the fear that someone was after her.
They see the same things everyone sees, but they attribute what they see to something completely different.
Like some people working on a car down the block and it backfired - she thought someone had taken a shot at her. Living in a downtown apartment with lots of traffic, some honking horns in the street below, she thought they were signalling to each other that they knew where she was, going around and around the block.
The name of the movie on the theater down the block "was" put there as a message to her that she'd better watch out. The song on the juke box had to do with Johnny and his relations, and a warning, etc, etc. The fear is very real and it's hard on the people around it, but it's harder on the person who lives it, I'm sure.
If you can change the subject, the person gets along better. They also may hear voices telling them to do things that are unreasonable, or accusing voices, and I think it's hard for them to know what is real.
I does make it easier to tolerate being with them if you realize it's not the person who said that, but the illness speaking, so don't take it personally. And be grateful it's not you who must go through that misery.
