Can the speaker box make 2 one year old Memphis 12's sound like pure crap? I mean they sound ok but not like any other memphis 12's i've heard before. The just sound like they're on their last leg or something.. They just sound like they're not putting out what they should be and i also hear a rattling noise inside the box on both sides. My friend said it sounds like a voice coils are going out. i've never played them hard or anything. The amp i have is a 500x2 watt. I've hooked it up to my friends 12's and it actually made his 12's sound better. Confused! any info will help.

boxes can make a huge difference. if you can, try mounting the speakers in another box and see if they still do it. if not, your box and subs arent matched, or its just a poor box. make sure all of the sides are sealed and no pieces are loose. feel if the box is vibrating more than it should be. any vibration in the walls of a box turns into bad sound from the speaker. before you throw out the subs, check if the box is good. and it could just be that theyre not matched for each other.

My son is into the big car stereo sound but he came to his old dad who he knew was into the old home tube hifi systems of the 60's and 70's to get an answer to his modern car stereo problem, which was almost like yours. One of the biggest offenders to a problem car stereo sound is the car battery itself. Without question for a system like yours you must buy the most expensive car batter money can buy that fits in your car. Why? Amperage and the most expensive car batteries has the most. The lack battery amps will make good speakers sound like crap. It is that plan and simple. Spend that much money on a car stereo and be prepared to buy the best battery to go with it. Also, are you using one of those large capacitor setups? The caps store back up energy/power that your car stereo system needs to add the extra power to make your base "thump" as you young people would say. Next, go through your cabinet with a fine tooth comb and tighten every screw and glue every peace of wood you can find inside the speaker cabinet. I will wager that your speakers are fine and your real trouble is the lack of amps from your battery.

By the way, my sons speaker sytem rocked when I was done helping him.

Am I the only person who doesn't read answers by people who don't have a little blue man next to them? Anyway, re: your question - The more serious something is the less serious I take it. I have an inverted approach. Funerals should be funny, dammit! You should laugh about getting fired. However, losing the taxi receipt and dreading having to justify why you should get reimbursed $15 even if you don't have a receipt - that's what keeps me up at night.

It is not possible that only one song to sound poorly due to a problem in the speakers.

Listen to few other songs and check how they sound.
If those also sound like crap to you, then hook up the speakers to another amp.
(may be your friend's; but make sure that impedances match with the speaker ratings...).

If that doesn't improve the sound quality, you can be certain that the problem is with your speakers.
