NO, you definitely do NOT need a Passport if you are a Canadian citizen entering the USA by land or ship and you will be arriving by land. The new law that took effect Jan 23 was specifically for AIR travel only on arrival to the US.
All people no matter what the nationality require some form of acceptable identification at a US ticket counter or boarding gate to enter a DOMESTIC US flight. (passport, drivers license, etc...)
The laws regarding passports for Canadian citizens, Bermudians and Mexican citizens should not take effect before January 1, 2008.

Starting on Jan 23 (passed) all flights leaving or coming into the United States will require a passport. As far as driving, passports wont be required until 2008. Domestic flights within the US do require a passport(im not 100%sure)

They are saying that if you plan to drive across the border, you don't need a passport, yet.
I think that rule also applies when flying from a US airport, but it is up to the discretion of the Customs offical at the airport. They are supposed to give you a 2 week grace period, and it doesn't apply for business or family emergency purposes.
To be honest with you, if you have the time to get a passport before you go, I think it will make your travelling much easier.
Good Luck and have a safe trip!!

Effective as of Tuesday, 1/23, you need a valid passport to enter and leave the United States. Canadians and Mexicans, among others, are now no longer to enter with just a birth certificate and/or driver license. So, to answer your question, it will not be possible without a valid passport.

All passports are scanned. the numbers and symbols on the bottom of the information page are machine readable. Newer passports do have a chip in the that contains the same information. You'll know because there will be a small icon on the cover indicating that.

They are passing federal laws that require Canadians (and everyone else) to have a passport to enter the US. So, get a passport unless you qualify for the exceptions which I am 98.99% that you don't.

It used to be as long as you had an ID it was ok. But now you do need your ID, Birth certificate, and passport. At school, I read this during my Social Studies class since every month we get international updated news textbooks.
