Most kids typically start when they are 5, 6 only if their birthday was later but usually there is only a few that are 6.

Technically, a child does not need to start school until age 8, but most people start their kids at age 5 because it is easier to go through. Every year, a new grade is passed if your child meets the requirements to pass that grade. So your answer is 6, 7, 8 etc., etc. Some communities allow children born early in the year start at age 4 in kindergarten. Some communities are more likely to allow children to skip grades if they are above average intelligence while others might be more aggressive holding children back if they do not meet criteria.

It also depends on the state. In Georgia, they have to be 5 by September 1 to start Kindergarten.

After that, there is no "required age". They just have to have completed the previous grade level.

I teach 3rd grade, and the age range in my class is from "turnng 8" to "turning 11". My school has children from 27 different countries and about half of the states, so we see all ends of the spectrum when it comes to when they started school.

In most places, Pre-K isn't mandated or guaranteed. (Which doesn't make it a bad idea, just hard to find.)

To attend kindergarten in September, 2007, your child must be 5 by September 1st. So 6 by 9/08, 7 by 9/10, etc. You get the idea.

Unless you skip a grade or get held back one...

Yes, 5 for K, 6 for 1st, etc.

We thought our daughter could wait till age 6. We taught her to read and write at home in the meantime. But when she turned 6, and we called the school, they told us kindergarten was mandatory, and she would have to attend it even if she was already 6.

Depends on their birthday. Schools have a time line for age for staring K. If your child is 5 and you want them to start the only way they will let them is if they will be 6 within a time frame.
