Raspberries! They taste awesome, are easy to grow and are so expensive in stores. They bear earlier than planting a tree (usually) too. And they multiply pretty fast.

Definitely tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, okra, squash. All these things are easy to grow and use. It takes some free time, but there is nothing better than fresh garden vegetables. Corn is good, too. Given the rising cost of fresh produce, and the age of the produce once it reaches certain parts of the country, home grown is the best and healthiest way to go! It can be canned or frozen the same day or within a couple of days of picking, preserving the vitamins.

Figuring in the cost of water, price of seed or plant , tools, fertilizer, etc. Growing your own food is more of a hobby. I love gardening and having chickens. Even though my water is cheep and never costs me more than the monthly base rate to water my garden and 3 fruit trees, it still costs in other things. Mostly time and energy.
I figured that most of my garden actually cost me more than buying it in the store. Over a long period of time I broke even and after about 6 years I might be saving money on some of it. Except the eggs. That is always in the red. Just a hobby.

Depends what the climate is like where you live. In a warm area my favorite vegetable is okra (gumbo). You can grow a lot in a small area and they are not always readily available from shops. I like to grow things that you do not see in stores. I live in a hot area so I grow okra, Ceylon spinach, winged peas, salsify and different types of chili. Look these up on websites specializing in unusual vegetables.

I work for a national retail chain and a few of our most expensive sellers are Potatoes, Peppers (bell, Jalapeno) Pears, Broccoli, Apples, Oranges, Nectarines,
Now if you like to grow things Garlic is cheaper to grow than it is to buy, so are onions and Lettuce. Cabbage can get a bit expensive as well. Good luck to ya!

I grow tomatoes, green peppers and jalapenos in the summer and make gallons of my own salsa (I just have to buy onions and celery) I then freeze it and we can have salsa all year. As much salsa as we go through I feel like we are saving some money this way. Those veggies are totally easy to grow.

Tomatoes or bell peppers can be grown easily in pots. That is what we do and it takes a lot less work and is inexpensive. They sure taste better fresh.
