Have a Lab puppy and would like to know the best food to buy. Maybe there are some lab techs or vets that have good information.

Thanks

Years ago, our vet suggested Innova brand dog food. It's one of the higher quality foods (I've seen it listed in the top 3). It doesn't have all the fillers the store brand types have either. It's an expensive food, but we found that there wasn't a need to feed as much for the dog to have the proper nutrional needs met. We've had our dogs on it for years, never had any problems are are very happy with it.

Eveyone I know who has fed their dogs the raw meat diet has now stopped! Cuz they know it's a waste of time when dog food manufacturers have done so much work & have done so many studies to determine what is healthiest for dogs.
If our dogs were in the wild - they would be scavengers - hence - omnivores.....
Which means they eat EVERYTHING - not just meat!
Don't believe me??? Just leave your garbage can unattended for 30 seconds with a few dogs around.
Oh, look! Fluffy is eating rotten tomatoes!
Anyway, just go with whatever your dog likes & whatever makes him healthy! It doesn't have to be a "fu-fu" brand - but if you feel like wasting your money - then go for it!
I know so many people who can't afford to pay their bills, but insist on putting their dogs on expensive diets for some strange reason.
My dogs all eat Purina, IAMs, & Eukanuba & they look amazing!! I have been breeding & showing Collies for 30 yrs & my dogs are healthy as can be.

Good luck to you & your puppy!

Personally, I stick with the better quality, holistic foods. My adult dogs eat Natural Balance. We recently purchased a German shepherd, and the breeder recommended Fromm Large Breed Puppy Gold. (Fromm also makes a regular puppy formula which is not holistic. I'd steer clear of that one.) The food is excellent.

We did a lot of research on breeders before we bought our puppy. When she recommended a holistic puppy food instead of the usual puppy brands, I knew we had found someone who really cared about her dogs.

go to about.com and read their dog section about dog food. be VERY wary about dog foods. the main-stream dog foods are TERRIBLE!!! they are filled with carbohydrates that carnivore dogs do not need-- along with a ton of other garbage. then, the dogs end up eating way more than what they actually need, which is why so many dogs (and cats as well) are so overweight. in reality, a raw meat diet is not practical or feasible for every dog owner, so in choosing a dog food make sure you do your research thoroughly.

I have 2 Lab puppies and a Golden Retriever/Saint Bernard mix breed. I feed the pups ProPlan Healthy Puppy Formula and ProPlan Adult for the older dog. My vet told me that ProPlan is a good choice of food which is why I went with it.

Even though it's not the most fu-fu brand, my puppy loves Eukanuba. But whatever choice you make, please be sure to change the food gradually i.e. mix in a little of the new food with the old food for a while. If you are not sure how, look for other posting on this subject.

The only choice for a carnivore is meat. Dogs do best on raw meaty bones with a prey model diet.

do some research online, and I think you will be surprised and shocked by what you find.

I will never again be seduced by the commercial dog food manufacturers telling me that they have the best nutrition for my dog. They come out with a new improved version a year later. How could it be the best if it is always getting new and improved?

Nature has provided our Domestic Wolves with the very best possible food for our dogs, and we should all be taking advantage.

Everyone has their Opinion on what the best kind of dog food is. Some people even recommend a raw diet. I do not agree with that diet, i think it is hard to manage, and can be dangerous. My favorite dog food is Nutro Max. I like it because dogs really like it, and it makes them look and feel healthy. They have a very shiny soft coat.

Talk to your Vet, depending on the animals nutritional needs, or other needs. They will be able to come up with a sound plan for you.
