I am looking to puchase a digital camera for my girlfriend's birthday. She has a lot of equipment but doesn't yet have a good digital slr. The 35mm camera she uses is a Leica brand. I first looked into trying to buy the same brand that she uses but they seem to be much more expensive than the cannon or nikkon ones I see everywhere. Also seems to be somewhat difficult to find a store which sells them.

Is there something significant which makes this particular camera so expensive? I talked with 3 different people at the bestbuy store and they led me to believe that cannon was one of the better brands to buy right now. They also said that her current lenses would fit the cannon body if I buy an adapter ring (which they don't sell).

I would like to surprise her with something nice and don't want to sound cheap but, well.... tuition bill coming very soon too.

Anyway, I'm truly ignorant when it comes to photography so I really do appreciate any advice.

If you're dating a girl shooting Leica cameras, don't even think of buying her anything associated with camera gear. If you don't know the significance of Leica, buy her flowers, candy, dinner, anything but camera gear. Unless, you enjoy the blank stare of someone receiving a gift that smells of limberger cheese to them.

Terisu is so right on this one. If she is using a Leica 35 mm, you will NEVER be able to buy the right thing. Once you are at this level, it's the fine points that distinguish one camera from another and you just will not be able to do that. If she is a Leica user, she might really look down on digital photography anyway.

I'd suggest that you get her a gift certificate at a local store or from B&H or Adorama and let her shop. Tell her that you want her to get a nice digital SLR and let her do the rest. I hope you love her at least $1,000 worth, because she will not be remotely satisfied with anything that costs less if she is accustomed to Leica.

If she's used to a Leica, she knows what's the best. Tell her you want to buy her a digital camera, and let her pick it out. Best Buy won't have the top of the line cameras. They will have cameras that most people buy. Take her to a real camera store.

Lecia make one of the best cameras I have ever seen. They are really nice but you have to know what is good and whats not. I would do what the person above me said. Take her to a specilized store for cameras like Sammy's Camera. They have a wide varity of lenses for Lecia (or at least at the one thats near me)
