Please don't be mean! I am just curious because the brother of a friend of mine just went to Iraq and he is in the marines. My friend told me that he gets offended when people say he is in the navy and vice versa (people in the navy get offended if you get them confused with the marines)

Basically the navy are on ships most of the time and the marines go and fight on land. The navy is in charge of all the aircraft needed to fight in battles and bombings. The marines are the main ones who go and fight (firts to go And last to leave). but the Marines are a branch of the Navy so I can see where people are coming from

The USMC operates under the Department of the Navy. The relationship between the two (sailors and marines) is similar to that of siblings. I was in the Navy for 10 years, and from my experience I can tell you that sailors and marines may squabble amongst themselves, but if a civilian or a member of another service were to mess with a sailor, a marine would run to help the sailor, and vice versa. It's just a good old-fashioned sibling rivalry because the two branches work so closely together, and are so different in the way that they operate.

There is the answer given to John F. Kennedy by a Marine stationed at the White House when Kennedy (a former Navy officer) made a comment about the Marines being a part of the Navy, the Marine Sergent responded, "The best damn part of the Navy, Sir".

As a Navy veteran , I can tell you I never understood the "dislike" but it is there and it ran deep when I was in.
Give the guy his due. He has joined a very proud, honorable organization. He has earned the right to be called a United States Marine and it is important to him. Hope some of this helps you.

Originally organized as the Continental Marines on November 10th, 1775 as naval infantry, the Marine Corps has evolved its mission with changing military doctrine and American foreign policy. The Marine Corps has served in every American armed conflict including the Revolutionary War. The United States Marine Corps, with 180,000 active duty and 40,000 reserve Marines as of 2005, is the smallest of the United States' armed forces in the Department of Defense.
The Marine Corps combat capabilities overlap those of the U.S. Army, the latter having historically viewed the Corps as encroaching on the Army's capabilities and competing for money, missions, and fame.
Most significantly, in the aftermath of World War II, Army efforts to restructure the American defense establishment included the dissolution of the Marine Corps and the folding of its capabilities into the other services. Leading this movement were such prominent Army officers as General Eisenhower and Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall..........

The Marines are the assault troops stationed on the ships. Sailors take and run those ships. :)
