I am applying for a credit card throught citibank. They have a spot to check if I want to add an additional card for a family member....if I put my fiancee's name down, will they check his credit, and if so, will his poor credit affect their decision of approving me/or will it affect my credit limit at all? thanks!

wow! thanks to everyone for their answers!
I am gonna wait till we are married, then add him on my credit to improve his credit. My credit is great, but limited, so thats why I want to get another card to expand it. He is working on his, I think it is up from 'poor' to 'fair' now lol.
THANKS again to everyone!

Do NOT get him a card that you will ultimately be responsible for. Do you ever watch court shows? Bad move. There's a reason he has bad credit. Remember that.

I'd be leary of putting anyone else on your credit card. Who knows what the future holds. I'm not saying he'd do this but if for some reason you had a falling out, you'll be held responsible for the balance. Think it over carefully. If he has poor credit that would set off alarms in my book.

No if you put his name down the card he gets will be a second to yours meaning its not going to help his credit and your limit on the card is his limit (meaning you share the same limit) so say you have a $500 limit and he spends $490 on something your card will only have $10 on it. Do you get what im saying?

I'd stay away from Citibank....and get one from someone else..
Citibank has a 27 day policy. Pay in 27 days or get charged $39. late fee, even if it's the post offices fault the mail was late. They raise their interest rates twice a yr. (it doesn't matter if your credit is perfect or not.) They are NOT nice to deal with, customer service people are nasty...

They sometimes do, depending if you are including him on your credit or just issuing him a second card. I suggest that you not give him a card until you are legally man and wife. If he didn't care about his credit, what makes you think he will care about yours? Before you make that move, he should pay off the delinquent debts on his credit report, wait approx. three months and get his own card. If he can't do that, then he can't pay off his portion of debt on your card. Don't do it.

Yes it will affect their decision. But if you have good credit they may only start you out with a lower line of credit. They should not decline the card.

A word of advise. Put his name on the account after you are married.

your fiancee's credit will probably not have a big impact on your credit limit, because Citibank will expect YOU to pay-off his debt because you have demonstrated yourself to be responsible (and in this case accountable for his debts).

that said, no matter how good your relationship/sex with your fiancee, i do not think you should marry them unless they can demonstrate themselves to be good with credit. that suggest to me that you have very different priorities (taking care of yourselves today, rather than your children 5 or 10 years from now, not to mention being able to retire at a reasonable age), which must be dealth with before marriage,

DO NOT DO THIS!!!! NEVER get credit with another person that you are not married to. That person could screw up your credit and walk out owing nothing. You may say that he would never do that, but you never know how a relationship will turn out.Wait and get credit after you marry.

To get the additional card is like for a spouce or child, just please remember your name is the main name and the one being held responsible for any money owed. EVER.Be smart and dont put any names down an dont get any additional cards, or yet be even smarter an tear the application up,and dont go into dept. You will be glad in the long run.

no. they will not check his credit.

i got my first credit card (which i didn't apply for) in the mail on my 18th birthday just because when i was 16 my mom added me as an authorized user. so basically, they will give it to anybody that you want to have it.

at the end of the day, you are the person responsible for the other charges so your credit is all that matters.
