I don't know where exactly you can get french onion soup in the loop but there is a TGI Fridays on Michigan avenue and they have it for sure. If you want something a little more upscale in the loop i suggest:
Atwood Cafe
http://www.atwoodcafe.com/
Ristorant We
http://www.ristorantewe.com/
Rhapsody
http://www.rhapsodychicago.com/
312 Chicago
http://www.312chicago.com/
BTW...the roasted garlic soup at ristorante we sounds excellent.
I'd like to respond to a few of the comments made by previous poster. Home Run INN Pizza sucks!! If you want real chicago pizza go to Uno's or Gino's East .
Lawry's is unique. That's It. It has been exactly the same since 1940...no joke...1940. They come around with a cool looking metal prime rib carving station and you get some prime rib which is ridiculously fatty and they have some side dishes which are loaded with hear-clogging cholesteral like creamy corn casserol heavy on the cream and creamed spinich heavy on the cream. Think of how restaurants have adapted since the 1940s as far as cooking a bit lighter and remember this place hasn't changed since 1940.
Check out this website for all the loop restaurants and reviews.
www.metromix.com
just click on restaurants on the top and then on the left do a search of loop restaurants.

U have to have the Pizza! Right off the mile, there is Gino's East (very good) or near rush street is Giordanos (the best). Go hungry! The Pizza is big and will fill you up (see the web site below). The mile offers so much in the way of good food, but Pizza is the best way to go in Chicago. If you want a really good place for Breakfast, its Lou Mitcheals.......oh boy the best morning food in the world.

Try the Walnut Room at Macy's. When Field's owned it they had great soups and people would go just for their soups. Also known for good tea.
