Basically, I need any tips on how to book the flight, as when I try tobook a return flight it always asksfor a specific return date, but as I'm not sure when I would be coming back I want to book a ticket that enables me to fly back on more flexible dates, certain dates over a certain period of time. Any tips? By the way I'm British and am flying from UK.

I think you should contact a travel specialist such as Travelbag or STA Travel and actually talk to them. They can advise which airlines have which deal. Although an open ticket is obviously the best option it is alot more expensive. You can book dates and if you give the required notice you can change the date/route for a fee. It cost me about $100 to change my BA/Qantus when I came back to UK. You will have a fab time, I did.

If you do not have permanent resident status, most countries require you to have a valid return ticket before allowing you in. Check with the airline about the flexibility of the return ticket. Get a flexible ticket and book for any date, you can always change it later.

If you're on a working holiday and proved you have GB£2000 to be able to support yourself, you used to be able to go out on a single ticket. You just merely bought another single in Australia when you wanted to leave. Nobody checked whether you had a return flight. However, this was 10 years ago. I don't know whether the rules are still the same.

Just visit a longhaul travel agency and tell them your needs. You can ask for a return open ticket. You have to put a date down uut don't have to travel on it. the agent will advise you. your visa will take time to arrive and lasts a year from time of issue, so make sure you ont apply too early or too late. decide on where you might like to stop on route and that will narrow down your choice of airlines.

i THINK.. that as soon as your 12 months is up, then you have to leave anyway. so just book a ticket for that final week or so, you could always buy a new one.

Or you could buy a RTW ticket - they are flexible enough, like it only costs a small fee to change the date.. and you could go onto other places as well............ Not sure on the time limit of them though.....?

i dunno.. try gapyear.com .. might have some answers. spesh the forum. Lots of similar questions.
