I am currently attending college and about to receive my degree in Criminal Justice. I want to work for one of these agencies but dont now yet, DEA, AFT, FBI, CIA, ICE. My question to everyone but especially any agents on here is what can I do now as a college student to make myself more marketable, giving me an edge for when it comes time to hire. I know going to the academy and becoming a cop to get experience is going to be the first thing on your mind but besides that what clubs, events, jobs, etc. can I get into now that will give me pretty good recognition when my application is submited? Thanks for your help!

right now you will have the best chance to get hired with ICE ( formerly US Customs) (now under Homeland secutity...with a 4 yr degree its a sure thing...just lots of paperwork to fill out...test, physical...more tests...and call OPM for the status of your application....it also helps to speak Spanish...

I work in one of those offices. I am just a contract office worker, but..most of the agents in my office have military experience or police experience. Accounting degree will help. Also start taking Spanish! I was also a criminal justice major, but so far have decided that being an Agent is not for me (i'm 24). I am going back to school to finish up my accounting though so i can apply for an IRS invesigator position. Try to get an internship at one of these agencies. Helps if you are near one of their headquarters or a large office. Really need to research these to determine which you want. I personally recommend FBI, because you handle a wide range of crimes, not just Drugs (DEA), ATFE (Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, Explosives), etc.

Also join your school's CJ club if they have one. Volunteer at the local police department (I did this....great references there!). Learn how to shoot now. Get in good physical shape (of course).

The agencies you mention almost always hire people with some experience in law enforcement, in addition to a college degree.Unless you have some special talent these agencies are loking for, you will not likely be accepted for the position of special agent. It also helps to have connections, because regardless of where you look for a job these days, it is dog eat dog.

Go to USAJobs.com and look to hearts content as there are all types of jobs available. I currently work for the Department of Homeland Security and they are almost always hiring somewhere, if you are willing to relocate.

join the reserves or active duty military, without that it is going to be extremely hard to get into one of those branches withou knowing someone. Start becoming friendly with a congressman/woman.

If you want to become a Government tool, maybe you should go suck on one.

Your career is important eh?! What if your principles are tested, would you do what your career tells you to, or would you forsake your career for your principles?

Being marketable to most would be a showing of loyalty, and/or courage and dedication. Do something to exemplify those traits.
