yes. theres the bonus (down below). do atheists knwo what bigotry is? i'm sure hitler loved other religions in his country (insert sarcasm here). tolerance and acceptance are not the same thing.

A bigot is a prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own.

The origin of the word bigot in English dates back to at least 1598, via Middle French, and started with the sense of "religious hypocrite", especially a woman. Bigot is often used as a pejorative term against a person who is obstinately devoted to their prejudices even when these views are challenged or proven to be false.

Forms of bigotry may have a related ideology or world views.

[edit] Etymology
The exact origin of the word is unknown, but may have come from the German bei and gott, or the English by God. William Camden wrote that the Normans were first called bigots, when their Duke Rollo, who receiving Gisla, daughter of King Charles, in marriage, and with her the investiture of the dukedom, refused to kiss the king's foot in token of subjection, unless the king would hold it out for that purpose. And being urged to it by those present, Rollo answered hastily, "No by God", whereupon the King turning about, called him bigot; which name passed from him to his people [1]. This is likely fictional, however, as Gisla is unknown in Frankish sources. It is true that the French used the term bigot as an abuse for the Normans.[2]

The 12th century Anglo-Norman author Wace claimed that bigot was an insult that the French used against the Normans, but it is unclear whether it entered the English language via this route.[3]

According to Egon Friedell, "bigot" is of the same root as "visigoth". In Vulgar Latin the initial v transformed into b (phenomenon today encountered in Iberian languages, such as Spanish language and Portuguese language; visi had truncated into bi in Vulgar Latin (phenomenon common in French and Portuguese). Certainly the Visigoths did behave in a manner which might have given birth to the expression; after they established a highly tolerant citizenship open to any religion, either Arian, Catholic, Jew or pagan, they converted from Arianism to Catholicism and adopted harsh restrictions against all others religions, even their own Arianism. This conversion to Catholicism was the occasion for Wisigothic rulers to become real "Spanish" as their roman compatriots, but they went into a serial of measures against pagans, pricilianists, heretics and Jews. The Spanish word bigote means moustache, probably because Visigoths had moustaches. Since both Normans and Goths were Germanic peoples, the Franks as a Romance nation might well have referred the Normans as "Visigoths" with the expression bigot. This claim is also supported by the fact that the word bigoth for Visigoths appear in Medieval Latin language

Bigot/ry - A person who is rigidly devoted to his own group, religion race or politics and is intolerant of those who differ. bigotry - The attitude, state of mind or behavior characteristics of a bigot; intolerance.

To answer your question on bigotry, what you see as intolerance by a few or by a lot of individuals is based on exclusiveness and how they view their group as exclusive and inclusive and chosen by whatever means that gets you into that group. It does not matter which group you belong to, there is a level of so called intolerance in all of them. The reasons for this abounds ad absurdum, however it borders in one root - sin. Man whether you wish to believe in it or not, is born with sin and a sinful nature wich is the cause of his sinning. Man can not have just sin in their lives without something that is the root of sin i.e. the sinful nature. This nature is the cause of all bigotry, intolerance and exclusiveness and segregation that you want to blame on religions and your number one problem with the Christians as they are in "your eyes intolerant" of others.

It seems that the world is trying to push this word down the throats of everyone. You have to tolerate everythng and if you don't allow for toleration then you are just wrong. Well that in and of itself is an "intolerant" viewpoint. That view point says that if you do not agree with my position or the position of the majority, minority, the popular or unpopular position you are labeled as "intolerant"! A bigot, racist, hate monger. All the while they slander your view point and make derogatory remarks about you telling all that you are "intolerant". Thus while they in the same breath demand tolerance of all are being intolerant of others.

This "tolerant" "respecting all viewpoints" is a smokescreen approach, a bandaide on a hemorrage, an aspirin for a cancer that is spreading the whole world over. When it comes full circle what will come of it is not "tolerance and well meaning" it will be an ideology that says, "you will do what they say you will do or you will die for it! It has happened before - be prepared - it is going to happen again -

I GUARNATEE IT!

Hey but don't listen to me - just open your eyes! See it for yourself - if you are truly wise and discerning as you think and believe that you truly are!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe in Jesus Christ, the LORD God Almighty and am filled with the Spirit of the Living God, I do not promote bigotry and can not stand bigotry, if you knew me which you don't you would find that out very quickly. The Word of God says that unless you believe and follow Christ you cannot be saved, you will die in your sins, and you will go to Hell, this to some would say that this "intolerance" of other religions and viewpoints. It would be if for one very dynamic reason - He is God, YHWH - His will is Supreme and His way is Perfect - argue with Him when you see Him if you charge Him with intolerance - but also remember - He sent His Only Begotten Son to die in your place for your sins and your sinful nature and your intolerance and your hatred - remember He is God and He will always have the last Word - For He is the First and the Last!

Yes, they know what it is. In fact, a lot of them practice it on a daily basis. "Bigotry" originated in Flimflam Flats, Alabama. It was first coined by a guy named Bubba Ray who hated anyone who wasn't exactly just like he was. He'd chase his victim around with a 12 gauge shotgun and he'd holler "If you don't find yo'self a big ol tree, I'm gonna shoot you dead!"

Over the years, "big ol tree" became "bigotry". Look it up! It's in your history book.

yes...why must you perpetuate the oppression of christians and jews? does it make you feel good? does it help you justify your bigoted beliefs? does it make you feel more comfortable for being atheist? Why ask a question that disguises your intentions?- why don't you just say that you believe religious people are bigots?
What's so wrong w/ people having their own religion...i hope you realize that your question merely expresses your own bigoted beliefs.
