First of all, do you go to SF State? If you do, then you will always find an essay like that in AAS classes. Come up with a plan.

In anycase, I recommend thinking of what makes you different from people from the Philippines? What makes you different from people in America that are not Pilipino? If you were not Pilipino, what would you be like? What are your advantages/disadvantages? (there is no letter "F" in the PI btw"

Really, the question is, what is YOUR experience?

DOn't pay attention to all the other people here telling you that "Filipino-American" doesn't exist or that hyphenating your ethnicities is wrong. Be proud that you do have something to represent that adds to the color of American people.

Unless they're Native American, everyone came here to the States from somewhere else. A Filipino American is someone whose ancestors immigrated here from the Philippines. They then went through the process of becoming a naturalized American citizen. They are also those who were born to parents or grandparents, etc who were immigrants from the Philippines.

It is not necessary to have American parents to be a citizen. If you are born here no matter your parents' country of origin or citizenship status, you're an American.

The following example of my own background and how I came to be an American citizen may be helpful. I'm Italian American.
My grandparents immigrated from Italy. Both became naturalized American Citizens and were quite proud to do so. My parents were born here as was I. I'm very proud of my Italian Heritage, probably because of the food. LOL Despite that, I'm American not Italian, unless I'm cooking!

Hope this is helpful.

It means you're an American. No other country in the world calls themselves their original heritage except America. Ever heard of a Brazillian Australian? Because I haven't.

But yeah. Filipino Americans are from the Philippines, which are north of Indonesia and south of Taiwan/Japan.

I don't like that idea, it is best to either be an american or a Filipino but why be both ?
i'm an american and proud of it and if someone wants to know my ancient ancestry we can talk about that too, it's not the same as ME & who I am

It means you spend way too much time worrying about where your great-great-great grandparents immigrated from.

Like most Hyphenated Americans.

Get over it. This wonderful Country is based on the idea of a melting pot. We are one culture, made up of many individuals.

If I wanted to be a Hyphenated American I would have to say I was an Anglo-Erou-Native-American .... I have looked and I cannot find that on any Government forms.

Where the hell is my special interest group?!

I want mine darn-it! My people were not only plundered by the Saxons, Visigoths and Vikings but some of them were plundered by Europeans.

I am so conflicted... Who do I sue for reparations?

A FIlipino American is someone who has left their homeland and cometo America to make a better life for themselves. But notjust for themselves because many of themsend much of their pay back to their family in the Philippines. Filipino Americans love theirhomeland, but they also love America and are thankful for the opportunities that it provides them. Many Filipinos go to countries like Saudi Arabia or UAE, but in such countries Filipinos are littlemore than slaves and are often mistreated and sometimessent home without pay. In America Filipinos are equals and have the opportunity to lift their families out of poverty.

it means you are really not an American but here just for the money and opportunity with no American customs because you can't let loose of your foreign ways and you reject and insult real Americans you might as well of stayed home as to bring your prejudices and clanisms with you .... if filipino hate americans and their culture and values so much why not stay in their own country ........most all other Americans have adjusted those that can't certainly don't get it . time to tighten up immigration standards.

I feel glad that you have to write something about a filipino american. I am half filipino and can speak a little tagalog. I am very proud of my heritage. Are you filipino?

You are an American of Fillipino ancestry.

Some Fillipinos are of mixed Spanish and native Fillipino ancestry and have Spanish surnames.

But you are no different than Americans of German ancestry or Americans of Japanese ancestry.

You are an American like all the other Americans.

Everything else is political and serves to separate you from American rather than unite you to the American dream.
