My co-worker gave me some fresh live dungeness crab that her husband caught (he's a crab fisherman,) I put it in the fridge over night and it was alive this morning, but now it's dead. Can I still eat it?

I'd only eat them after they're dead a couple of hours. Its just like a whole dead fish in the refrigerator. Unlike a fish from the store that is good for maybe a day in the fridge, a whole fish (or crab) that hasn't been gutted or bled should be prepared within a few hours. Otherwise all the germs in the gut start creeping into the meat. And unlike fish, you can't gut a crab.

Having it on ice or in a refrigerator slows down this effect but its just for a few hours.

Next time cook them right away. If you dont want to eat them just then, freeze them after they have been cooked. You can warm them up later.

Crab & Lobster have a high bacteria count within there bodies as a result when they die they will start to decay from the inside almost emeaditl This process can be slowed if they are kept cold. I myself fish for lobster and have had the same thing happen as you have with the crabs, I have cooked them with out a problem and found that those that weren't good, the meat just fell apart and was mushy. I do not cook any that died before being refrigerated as I know these would be no good and not worth taking a chance on. So the next timeit happens on you cook them as soon as you can and maybe you'll still have some crab meat!
