Generally retinal detatchment will start as flashes of light in the affected eye, then decays to loss of vision in that eye. This happens as the layer of nerve cells on the back of the eye begins to separate from the back wall.

Diplopia, or double vision, is caused when the eyes do not point at exactly the same object when you are trying to focus on it.
