G'day,
First of all... to Grarrrrrrr. Mate, you have absolutely no idea what racist is until you come and live in a country where you are a minority and treated like 2nd class citizen all your life, no matter how good you try to be. You will always be the scapegoat of everything that gone wrong in the country.
I know this because that's how I had been treated in the country where I originally come from. I am an immigrant and have been living in Melbourne for 16 years and never regret the move at all. I do not have Anglo-Saxon appearance, I speak English with an accent and I still feel like I am born in this country all along. My neighbors are combinations of immigrants and 'Anglos' Aussies and we are getting along very well. Racism will always be there in any countries, but compared with the treatment that I had in the country that I was born, I definitely do not feel it here.
Unfortunately, some immigrants feel that they need to change the country where they currently live to suit their lifestyle. Please be advised that IMMIGRANTS (yes, that's including me) are a newcomer and therefore need to adjust themselves to the country we chose to live in. Of course, hypothetically speaking, if I do not like the country where I currently live in, then I will move again to find the one that I like best.
Now... back to you Joe :)... unfortunately you did not mention which city that you are coming to. However this is what I can say about Melbourne:
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day like a couple of months ago, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers.
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.
I certainly hope this helps. I agree with the previous answerers though, that paradise is subjective. For me and my family (and I'm sure a lot of other immigrants)... yes it is. However I do know some immigrant friends that were not so lucky and did not adjusted very well so they chose to go back to their home countries. There will be some time needed for adjustments, and sometime homesickness, but there will be helps and supports along the way since Australia is built by immigrants (yes, this include the Anglo-Saxons, since the only people truly originated in Australia are the Aborigins).
I certainly hope that my answer add more information that may influence your decision about Australia. Good luck mate.

Well I live in Australia (but I'm from New Zealand) and I've been to the states man times and I can tell you this: Comparing life in general in Australia to life in general in the USA is like comparing life in general between geographically distant different states within the USA. The environment's a bit different; the architectures a bit different, and the foliage's a bit different and the wildlife's a bit different, and the climates a bit different and the fashion's a bit different and the culture's a bit different and the social morays are a bit different and the way people speak's a bit different. But in a strange way they are very similar as they are both young countries with similar urban sprawl suburbia and had similar ideas about how to build their country as they planned things largely at the same time. And most of Australia lives in suburbs where there are no Kangaroo's. Those things live in the wilderness. A major difference? sexual morays. Aussies are pretty open, Americans are much more prudish IMO. Another difference? Sports that are played. In the USA obviously there's Baseball, American football, Ice Hockey, NASCAR, IndyCar. In Australia there's Cricket, Rugby Union and Rugby League, Australian Rules football, Soccer, and their own motorsport. However, both countries play a lot of Basketball and Tennis. Difference #3 Religiousness. Christianity is much more at the forefront in the USA. Furthermore you see a greater presence of other religions in Australia with the odd Islamic Mosque or Bhuddist temple.

It certainly is! Australia is the best country in the world, and you won't find anywhere more beautiful and welcoming than right here in our big brown country. I'm thankful every day that I wake up here and know that I live in a true paradise. HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY!!!!!
Hey! Grrrrrrrr If you hate Australia that much and living here is so bad, leave! Oh and take a look back at the Cronulla riots and see what caused them. They started because the Lebanese were attacking lifeguards and women on the beach at Cronulla. So don't always jump in and blame the Anglos deary!!!

I don't know if "paradise" is the right word! Parts of Australia are paradise, but I don't think you could call our big smoggy cities that! Sydney has terrible traffic, and it gets really hot & if you work as a professional, you have to wear suits in weather over 100degrees regularly...that is not paradise. But if you are living by one of our beautiful beaches and don't have to commute to a city, perhaps in the rainforest, it is paradise....that is of course, if you don't mind life threatening spiders & snakes around you, not to mention the crocs & sharks etc in the water!

Well that depends what you think paradise is? Whether it is having to go to work, when its a beautiful day. Paying house prices that are growing larger. Paying for schooling for your children and paying healthcare too. Its just a country with similar problems to everywhere else in the World. Yes, its a fantastic place to live, but it still haves it negatives.

depends on what you will be doing there. To get a job, or just to retire by the beach resorts? It's a beautiful place, but where you come from may be just as beautiful too. Take a month vacation around the place and maybe you'll see for yourself and then can decide on doing something more permanent? By they way, Ozz are going thru terrible heat wave, brush fires and drought and have a serious water shortage situation for some time.

Other than all the poisonous creatures on the land and in the sea, I would much rather be there than in North America at this time- after being lied to by various people about invading my privacy when I have evidence to actually show that some of these pricks actually hacked into my computer, were into spy cameras, and so on. After being used and jerked around illegally without being able to even get proper due process and so on, and even being intimidated by having my identity mistaken, I am disgusted with this society! Furthermore, because of negligent practises and fraud regarding the Condo crisis and repairs under the New Home Warranty program, I do not have any money, I have a debilitating disease, and I have to put up with people in collections phoning me for money when all kinds of people know these facts!! That's really inhumane and disgusting!! Yes, Australia seems like a paradise compared to this crap! I am almost ready to put together all this evidence and e-mail the UN Human Rights Commission as a last effort before I am forced onto the street because of discusting revolting heartless people!!

Australia is a horrendously racist place currently.
There's a mood about,there's an 'us' and there's a 'them'.
the 'us' is "Anglo Australians" the 'them' are anyone who is not Anglo-Saxon esp Asians or Arabs.
There is a serious racist problem in Australia.
It expresses itself in the cricket,in the papers, the radio, hitler type nationalism,it expresses itself when anglo australians start beating up anyone who looks Mediterranean or Middle Eastern at Cronulla a year ago.
the “Us and Them” approach is failing dismally the result is that Australian society is hurling itself into an abyss of intolerance and potential violence.
If you want to join a racist currently nazish society please come over.
p.s Cato,a lifeguard was attacked was because he made some derogatory remarks to them. 5,000 people gathering to bash up any ethnic person does'nt help.
They organised that whole day as 'leb and wog bashing day' which refers to all Mediterranean people,a jewish boy and greek girl were among those attacked and t-shirts were worn with "Ethnic Cleansing Unit" written on them for god sake the motivation was purely based on race.
