We are thinking of getting directv in 4 different rooms but dont have phone jacks in all the rooms. Can they be set up using just the main phone jack in the living room? Is there a cable going from the satellite dish down to each receiver? Also, what does the receiver connect to (tv, power outlet, phone line ect.)?

Ok, I will tell you how my Dish network works, and I figure Direct is the same.

Each Receiver will be fed from the dish, there will be one or two cables coming from the dish to the receiver, These are split to feed the original rec. and each of the others. there are not 8 cables from the dish to feed the 4 rec. the cables from the dish are coming from the LNB (that thing out in front of the dish, sometimes it is a single LNB and sometimes a double. There is a switching device that may be in line at the dish so you may only have one line coming in from the dish, in that case you will use a splitter that has one in four out (one for each receiver).

You do not have to connect to the phone line unless you want to use pay per view channels, then the receiver communicates with the headquarters via phone. you rec. data in from the dish and any outgoing communication is via phone line, you never know it is going on, but it is. So if you don't order ppv you don't need the phone connection. "Dish will gather information from time to time by sending a signal to your receiver and it in turn can call the Hdqts. back and you won't even know it has happened. Now they may also offer the additonal feature of caller ID over your tv. If you have the service from the phone co. then dish can display incoming calls on your phone right on the TV screen.

Receiver connects to Power outlet, the Dish, and your TV. Phone is optional.

FYI there are some devices out there that will connect to your receiver and send a wireless signal to your tv. so you don't have to run the cable. about 130 bucks.

If you are not using all the tv's at the same time you can hook more than one tv to each receiver, you can only access one channel but that chanel can be watched on more than one tv.

I have three rec. feeding 5 tv's but only watch two at any given time, I actually feed each tv from all three rec. so I can use PIP on the tv.

hope this helps.

Phone jacks are not necessary to use a receiver so don't worry about it unless the receiver is a DVR.

Yes, there will be a cable running from the dish to each receiver so be prepared to have holes drilled in rooms with no cable. Unless you want it installed through the attic or crawlspace so the cable can run in the wall but be prepared to pay $75 an hour for that.

Each receiver needs to be plugged to an outlet & a cable from the receiver to the TV. That's it.

Have you ever thought about DISH Network? I think this will be a better route for you. The reason why is because they have dual-tuners, which means that you only need (2) main boxes - totally service to (4) televisions.

With the dual-tuners, the coax from the satellite dish comes down to the (2) main boxes. The other two boxes do not need a phone line nor a line from the satellite dish, only from the main box.
