If the dog's diet and exercise are appropriate, the talk with a vet. Otherwise, adjust the dog's diet and exercise appropriately.
As far as the amount of food is concerned, you just have to watch your dog. My dog eats more than most and is not overweight. She is very active and has a high metabolism. You just have to watch your dog and fit it's lifestyle.

You could be over feeding her/him. Dogs only need to be given food one to two times a day, and if your feeding them two times you should feed them less then if you were feeding them once. Are you taking your dog for walks or taking the dog to the park to run?? Changing your dogs diet is a good start. Talk to your vet depending on the breed of the dog and the size depends on how much it should eat, and your vet will be able to tell you how many cups a day she/he should be given.

First of all, they're not getting the exercise they need. Our three dogs put on weight in the Winter since they don't spend as much time outside.

Cut back on their food intake and get down on the floor and play. It will do you both good. Have fun!!!!

More details would be nice. What breed? Age? who says the dog is overweight?

Cut back on food and increase exercise, but nothing too drastic at first. You don't want to put the animal in shock.

I have 3 dogs over 50 # each. They get only 2 cups of dry food a day, and they are fat. Cut the food.

you must feed it too much, and not have given it the proper diet and exercise. i would consider switching to a lean dog food. remember to mix it with your old food gradually. make sure that your pet is getting enough exercise in the process. start out slow and keep increasing the amount of time.
