Hold on, I know that California is a big state, but to compare it to a country (especially little old England seems unfair).. We've got it all here - except the nice weather. The scenery, the history, nightlife, sleepy villages, and plenty more footballers and their wives if the Californians want them. We'll keep Madonna though. ;-)

Not sure whether you mean as a vacation destination or someplace to live.
As a vacation destination, California has beaches, deserts, mountains, national parks like Yosemite and Death Valley, and cities like San Francisco, Santa Barbara and San Diego that offer gobs of opportunities for recreation.
As someplace to live, California weather in the southern half of the state can't be beat. If you like more rain Northern California or England would be your best bet.

Go to California for the weather, but for the history and culture, definitely England. People in both places are either nice or rude, but when it comes to making friends while traveling, I think England has the edge.

I live in England but have been to California several times. The grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence to me! So when in England i want to live in CA, but after I had lived in CA a while i would probably get home sick and want to come back to England! so I think i would be best living in between!.....Bermuda!

Always wanted to see England. I had tickets to fly there, new clothes, new luggage, hotel room reserved, even several hundred dollars converted over to English money. 3 weeks before time to go, 9/11 happened, and the person I was gonna go with backed out of going. Couldn't get a refund on my ticket, either.
Never wanted to go to California. Soon as I got there, "the big one" would happen, I am sure.

What are you asking? Are you lost or something?
If you're thinking about moving to one of them then I'd have to say England. I do think it depends on your age though. I'm Scottish but I was on holiday in California recently. I could see myself going there for university but I think I'd rather settle down somewhere in the UK. Maybe that's just me being British though...I don't know.
