Of course they "kept him alive" just to breed him! Does it make the owners greedy because they wanted to save him & try to recover the money they have invested in him?

If you had BIG BUCKS on the line you would want to protect your investment as well. They do love him besides!!

I grew up at a small track in W VA, & folks grow attached to their horses like people do to other pets. Horses have personalities

I wona cool Million on War Emblem and lost my butt on Barbaro, but thats horse racing. He's a good horse. I never bet on Kentucky when Barbaro ran. I was still spending my winnings from War Emblem.

After the Preakness, Barbaro left me with 250,000
I am through gambling on Horses.

I think it would be a great idea for him to do a walk around and the fans would LOVE it..........He's still not out of the woods yet according to reports and had a set-back 2 weeks ago.........Reports now say that he's gotten past that setback......

I honestly believe he would have won the Triple Crown had he not been hurt.........CAT

UPDATE................1/29/07.........In case some of you might not have heard yet, I'm very saddened to say Barbaro was put down this morning...........It became evident overnight that he could not stand nor could he lie down..........CAT

webmaster@bobblesandmore.com UPDATE 1/28/07 - Barbaro's condition has worsened and is now being called critical........It was on the news tonight and they don't know if he's going to make it thru this major setback.........PLEASE NOTE: This wasn't part of my original answer but since everyone here has an interest in Barbaro I wanted to post the latest news for those who might not have heard it............Thnx, CAT

I think they will be thrilled if he can make it back to KY and stand stallion duty. There is no reason to put him back on the track. It could be considered cruel to take him back to the scene of his terrible injury. He has retired from that lifestyle and if he is able to hold it together and make it through the laminitis, the best he can hope for is a pampered life on the farm.

There are too many things that can happen with tons of fans and others horses around. He could get spooked and hurt himself, get loose and try and run. Plus, I doubt he will be able to support the weight of a human on his back.

We will always have the great memories of the Derby win.

This horse has a heart of gold and the competitive spirit that so many horse owners want in their equine athletes! His story goes well beyond the "will to live". He is awesome. I am glad he just didn't get put down like so many others before him that have gone down on the track. He will never race again, but I hope to see many of his progeny run when they finally do hit the ground!

Yes, I agree. He's very lucky to have wonderful and compassionate owners and trainers to give him another chance at life! Barbaro must have alot of heart to go through everything that he went through. Many prayers and praises to the veterinarians and his caregivers. You Go Barbaro!!!!!

Barbaro will heal, but he won't be 100%. So I doubt that he will go back to the track more than likely he will be used for breeding purposes only.

No, horses mentally see a track and need to run. It is something I have learned from re-training many race horses. A horse show a few years ago was held in the infield and all of the ex-racers went nuts, wanted to Run.

To put him back on the track would make him want to run, of course they will not let him but even the jumping and prancing around he would do could hurt him again, and that horse can not afford to be hurt again, he will never, ever be able to even walk properly again.

Making him walk that far could hurt him to. Cause too much stress on his muscles. This horse is too valuable as a stud to risk all of this. Sorry to be a downer.

I agree that he will walk again but I think its a bit ignorant to think he will ever race again his injury was too severe and even if he was well enough to try to get fit again his owners would be stupid to risk re-breaking the leg
