I can remember shopping with my parents and in the dairy section you could always find a pound of butter( the 4 sticks) that had been opened and some one bought just one of the sticks. Also you would see a dozen eggs split in half where some one only bought a half dozen. Do people still do this anymore and do you think the stores would allow it now a days?

I'm not looking to buy it this way, I was just remembering things from years ago.

I haven't seen the single sticks of butter anymore, but at most grocery stores where I live, you can buy a pack of just 6 eggs, instead of the whole dozen. But I remember those days.. vaguely. Been a long time ago!!

Some stores sell half dozen eggs. As far as butter, just buy the the 1 pound box. It lasts a long time in the fridge.

The stores do allow the eggs splitting but some are stocking 1/2 dozen cartons but the butter sold separately I have only seen in the small stores such as Convenience Food marts.

At our locally owned (smaller) grocers you can still purchase one stick of butter. All of our grocery stores sell split dozens of eggs.
If your local store will not sell you one stick of butter, consider buying the whole pound. You can put your butter in the freezer with no ill effects. I buy a lot of butter when it is on sale before the holidays for baking.
Good luck!

I have not seen anyone do it, and from the reactions that I get from the cashier not being able to make change without the machine telling her how much change is due, I think she would FREAK OUT if I ripped the egg carton in half OR walked up there with a stick of butter.

the stores don't sell that way any more maybe because its not profitably enough,to sell in less quantity .or the health dept. wouldn't allow for sanitary reasons.which makes good sense.but too be very honest with you i do remember not long ago in a grocery store had half dozen eggs but don't ask me where cant remember.and those good old days are really gone unfortunately.take care .chow 4 now.

There are VERY small stores located in the backwoods off the paved road a ways, in the thick of the Appalachian hills, where stores allow this. Some shoppes sell one egg by itself. You can still buy butter in brown paper.

Very cheap.

I know for sure that the egg splitting thing is still done, but the butter thing is iffy, because the packages are sealed. I think most stores would frown on this kind of "personalizing" because of Dept. of Health regulations. Some small and discount grocers around me still allow some things though, check your local niche markets!
