Email? ewww.....no. Use the old fashioned way. Tell a mutual friend to drop hints (or, if he is a bone head like me, tell him outright) and then let him take it from there. This way you are off the hook if the feeling is not mutual. You did not personaly stick your neck out just to have it chopped off. BTW...us guys, we don't view you ladies as desperate- instead we see it as simply the fact that we are just so darn desirable..lol. Really, do not worry about that issue.
Oh..should a lady show interest first? Heck YES! Guess why I am married now? She pretty much had to draw me a picture...when it comes to love, simply do what needs to be done.

Additional information about the nature of the relationship would be helpful. If you've already met offline, you can simply invite him out for dinner or some other activity - that does not look desperate, it's just an evening out to see how you two hit it off.
