do split ends add to the static problem?

They don't make the static worse, the static just makes them more obvious. If your hair is too dry it will split more easily and it will also get more static, so the two problems can go hand-in-hand because of that.

I am fairly sure that split ends cause hair to become more static, because the hair is not healthy. If you have split ends, your hair needs a trim. I also think that if you brush dry hair too much, it becomes static as well.

No, split ends do not cause static. What causes static is lack of moisture in the air. That is why we get it in the winter, the air is very dry. Just make sure you use a good professional moisturizer on your hair to condition it. It will help alot.
