I disagree with the person who seemed to suggest that just because a vet has an education, they are always right. I've had many vets make mistakes, and second opinions have saved my kitties many times, and sometimes those second opinions came too late after the first doc was wrong.
Based on what others are telling you, it sounds like it may well be a a weight issue, but if you are still concerned, bring him to another vet for a second opinion...it also sounds like he is very young to already have love handles, and that itself could be a worry. I've never heard of a fat 1 year old cat as they are only just becoming full grown then. The opinion may be the same, but at least you then won't have to worry that your cat's not getting the appropriate treatment.
Good luck with your kitty & thanks for caring for him so much!

Your vet probably is right, since they have gone through over 8 years of college to get to that point as well and a 1 year internship. Vets have no qualms or issues with giving a person a second opinion to somebody who is worried about their animal.
Most altered house cats are a little on the pudgy side after they are three years old anyway, mine are with their bellies flapping right and left as they trot along... Once they develop that belly flap it will never completely go away unless you take them to get a "tummy tuck".

Cats do tend to get fat--and they can show up as deposits on their belly...we see lots of them at the cats-only clinic where I work. If you're still concerned, you can always take him to get a second opinion.
That said, lots of cats get overweight on regular dry food. Cats are meant to eat a high protein diet, and there are often too many fillers and carbohydrates in pelleted foods.
You might try switching him over to canned food only--they're a lot more satisfied on that than the "light" dry food (they just get frustrated and eat LOTS of that, so it doesn't make any difference) that sort of seems to be like cardboard. Plus, the low caloric content might not meet his needs. We really do see the best results in weight loss on a canned-food diet. Usually that's 2-3 cans per day--look at the recommendations on the label for the weight you WANT him to be. Don't feed him for his current weight or he'll just stay there.

Abdominal lumps on the "belly" are potentially dangerous. Unfortunately most lumps in the feline are malignancies; as opposed to the canine that are usually benign. I would definitely get a second opinion. There is blood work that can be done to guide them in a direction. If there was no blood work done with lumps present, get another vet.

Does the cat have any other symptoms? Panting, not eating, lethargic? Do they feel hard? If any of these, you may want to get a second opinion and feel free to request x-rays/blood tests You'll have to pay for the tests but it'll at least make you feel better knowing if it's anything or not.

(lumps like BIG zits or moles)...neutered male cats can get these pugges of fat on their belly/sides...cats aren't supposed to weigh 20 lbs...if she says they're love handles thats probably what they are..and he needs to go on a diet and get some exercise..play with him...
