what kind of cat is the best companion for a (nice) small dog?

I have a gentel italian greyhound who likes company.

I don't know if an italian greyhound would appreciate a cat because they are so docile and cats can be, well, pissy. I would suggest adopting an adult cat who is known to get along well with dogs so it won't be rude with yours.
