How do you replace the Transponder/reciever in a 98 Ford Explorer.

Remove the ignition lock cylinder:
1. Turn the igntion key to the RUN or ON position
2. With a stright pick, HARD tooth pick or other straight blunt object, insert into hole under steering column, just below lock cylinder.
3. "Feel" around for detent release lock and depress & pull lock cylinder OUTWARD SIMULTANEOUSLY, to remove.

Remove the steering column cover;
1. Tilt steering wheel all the way downward.
2. Place column selector lever into "manual 1" position.
3. With a pair of vise grips, remove steering column tilt adjustment lever by turning lever counterclockwise.
4. Remove the three philips screws that secure upper & lower steering column cover halves.
5. CAREFULLY, remove the two halves.

Remove the lower instrument panel cover;
1. Remove the hood release and parking brake release handles (two 7 or 8mm screws on each handle).
2. Remove the remining two 7mm screws securing the lower plastic panel to the instrument panel.
3. Remove the plastic panel.
4.Remove the six screws retaining the metal reinforcement panel, and remove panel.

Remove the transceiver;
1. Remove the one screw supporting the electrical connector to the underside of the steering column assembly.
2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the other end, where transceiver plugs into main harness.
3. Remove transceiver from around ignition lock cylinder housing.

INSTALLATION IS REVERSE OF REMOVAL. Hope this helps.
